The thesis analyzes Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel’s contribution to the German codification debate in the 19th century and its potential for a modern theory of codification. According to Hegel, codification means abstraction and system formation based on the actual, with respect to the reasonable law. On this basis, codification is a constant process and as much a requirement of a civilized society of free citizens as it is a contribution to its realization.

Jahrhundert (z.B. Plessner, Anders, Arendt) elaboriert. The volume is a collection of historical and systematic essays on the concept of a negative anthropology. The systemic roots of this idea extend back to the nineteenth century (Hegel, Feuerbach, Nietzsche). The essays examine the previously uncodified terminological basis of negative anthropology in analyses of various twentieth-century approaches (e.g. Plessner, Anders, Arendt).

Intervening in the multidisciplinary debate on emotion, Tropes of Transport offers a fresh analysis of Hegel's work that becomes an important resource for Pahl's cutting-edge theory of emotionality. If it is usually assumed that the sincerity of emotions and the force of affects depend on their immediacy, Pahl explores to what extent mediation--and therefore a certain degree of manipulation but also of sympathy--is constitutive of emotionality. Hegel serves as a particularly helpful interlocutor not only because he offers a sophisticated analysis of mediation, but also because, rather than locating emotion in the heart, he introduces impersonal tropes of transport, such as trembling, release, and shattering.

In Ontological Catastrophe, Joseph Carew takes up the central question guiding Slavoj Žižek philosophy: How could something like phenomenal reality emerge out of the meaninglessness of the Real? Carefully reconstructing and expanding upon his controversial reactualization of German Idealism, Carew argues that Žižek offers us an original, but perhaps terrifying, response: experience is possible only if we presuppose a prior moment of breakdown as the ontogenetic basis of subjectivity. Drawing upon resources found in Žižek, Lacanian psychoanalysis, and post-Kantian philosophy, Carew thus develops a new critical metaphysics—a metaphysics which is a variation upon the late German Idealist theme of balancing system and freedom, realism and idealism, in a single, self-reflexive theoretical construct—that challenges our understanding of nature, culture, and the ultimate structure of reality.

Philosophical theology in transition (II / 2) deepens the dialogue with the atheists (in II / 1) in terms of the history of metaphysics. Despite turning away from Hegel, they remain in the space of metaphysics through the development of their own ontologies. The understanding of being that they and their theological opponents presuppose levels the creator-creature relationship and distort it technomorphically. The deconstruction leads to a philosophy of creation as a gift that cannot be thought without being.

What is there left to say about the human condition after the so-called „end of anthropology“? Never before have conceptions of what it means to be a human being been as diverse and fragmented as in the late modern age – with severe consequences for democratic discourse and liberal, „Western“ societies as a whole. Examining the work of American theologian Reinhold Niebuhr (1892–1971), the book presents new insights into the intersection of anthropological thought and ethical orientation. Niebuhr, motivated by his perception of profound political and social crises in „Western“ societies, develops an innovative, pragmatic and „realistic“ type of theological anthropology. His anthropological approach functions as the basis of a much larger endeavor: rescuing Christianity and democracy itself. Reading Niebuhr today opens up a refreshing perspective on current debates on public theology and the so-called „crisis of democracy“. In this context, the book argues, theological anthropology can be reclaimed as an essential social resource: It offers a comprehensive understanding of human nature both at its best and at its worst, providing the indispensable basis for the survival and vitality of democracy.
