À l'instar des Balkans, la désoviétisation du Caucase a libéré des conflits identitaires particulièrement violents. Après plus de soixante-dix ans de refoulement, les vieilles haines sont remontées à la surface d'une région de la taille de la France qui a changé de statut géopolitique depuis 1990, passant de celui de terminal d'empire (russe puis soviétique) à celui de carrefour d'influences. Corollaire de cette mutation, la découverte de nouveaux gisements de pétrole et de gaz est venue dynamiser des affrontements séculaires.
