Feminist Review is a peer reviewed, interdisciplinary journal setting new agendas for feminism. Feminist Review invites critical reflection on the relationship between materiality and representation, theory and practice, subjectivity and communities, contemporary and historical formations. The Feminist Review Collective is committed to exploring gender in its multiple forms and interrelationships. Feminist Review resists the increasing instrumentalisation of scholarship within British and international higher education and thus supports the generation of creative and innovative approaches to knowledge production. As well as academic articles we publish experimental pieces, visual and textual media and political interventions, including, for example, interviews, short stories, poems and photographic essays. When Feminist Review first appeared in 1979 it described itself as a socialist and feminist journal, ‘a vehicle to unite research and theory with political practice, and contribute to the development of both’. Challenges of race, class and sexuality have been central to the development of the journal. Forty years later, FR remains committed to these core values.

In nearly all societies and epochs, the heroic is gendered on many levels. However, social and cultural production of the heroic cannot be understood solely through the lens of masculinity, nor does it make sense to regard women or femininity merely as exceptions. Rather, it is important to take the relational character seriously. This volume is the first attempt to employ gender as an analytical category for heroism research. Using diverse approaches from the humanities, gender serves as a tracer of the heroic and as an instrument for examining its historical contexts, its medial and performative manifestations, as well as its temporal cycles and transformations. With the help of the gender category and its attributes, the heroic is reevaluated.

This book, the first feminist ethnography of the violence in Northern Ireland, is an analysis of a political conflict through the lens of gender. The case in point is the working-class Catholic resistance to British rule in Northern Ireland. During the 1970s women in Catholic/nationalist districts of Belfast organized themselves into street committees and led popular forms of resistance against the policies of the government of Northern Ireland and, after its demise, against those of the British. In the abundant literature on the conflict, however, the political tactics of nationalist women have passed virtually unnoticed. Begoña Aretxaga argues here that these hitherto invisible practices were an integral part of the social dynamic of the conflict and had important implications for the broader organization of nationalist forms of resistance and gender relationships. Combining interpretative anthropology and poststructuralist feminist theory, Aretxaga contributes not only to anthropology and feminist studies but also to research on ethnic and social conflict by showing the gendered constitution of political violence. She goes further than asserting that violence affects men and women differently by arguing that the manners in which violence is gendered are not fixed but constantly shifting, depending on the contingencies of history, social class, and ethnic identity. Thus any attempt at subverting gender inequality is necessarily colored by other dimensions of political experience.
