Abstract

This book provides an overview of the emerging topics in biostatistical theories and methods through their applications to evidence-based global health research and decision-making. It brings together some of the top scholars engaged in biostatistical method development on global health to highlight and describe recent advances in evidence-based global health applications. The volume is composed of five main parts: data harmonization and analysis; systematic review and statistical meta-analysis; spatial-temporal modeling and disease mapping; Bayesian statistical modeling; and statistical methods for longitudinal data or survival data. It is designed to be illuminating and valuable to both expert biostatisticians and to health researchers engaged in methodological applications in evidence-based global health research. It is particularly relevant to countries where global health research is being rigorously conducted.

Abstract

Since the publication of the first edition, BIOSTATISTICS AND EPIDEMIOLOGY has continued to garner loyal readers from across speciality areas in the biomedical community. BIOSTATISTICS AND EPIDEMIOLOGY provides clear, concise explanations of the underlying principles of statistics and epidemiology, as well as practical guidelines of "how to do it" and "how to interpret it." Through its several editions, BIOSTATISTICS AND EPIDEMIOLOGY has continued to adapt to evolving areas of research in epidemiology and statistics, while maintaining the original objective of being non-threatening, understandable and accessible to those with limited or no background in mathematics. Two new areas are covered in the third edition: genetic epidemiology and research ethics. With the sequencing of the human genome, there has been a flowering of research into the genetic basis of health and disease, and especially the interactions between genes and environmental exposures. The medical literature in genetic epidemiology is vastly expanding and some knowledge of the epidemiological designs and an acquaintance with the statistical methods used in such research is necessary in order to be able to appreciate new findings. Thus this edition includes a new chapter on genetic epidemiology as well as an Appendix describing the basics necessary for an understanding of genetic research. Such material is not usually found in first level epidemiology or statistics books, but it is presented here in a basic, and hopefully easily comprehensible way, for those unfamiliar with the field. The second new chapter is on research ethics, also not usually covered in basic textbooks, but critically important in all human research . New material has also been added to several existing chapters. I hope this book will be useful to diverse groups of people in the health field, as well as to those in related areas. The material is intended for (1) physicians doing clinical research as well as for those doing basic research; (2) for students-medical, college, and graduate; (3) for research staff in various capacities; and (4) for anyone interested in the logic and methodology of biostatistics and epidemiology. The principles and methods described here are applicable to various substantive areas, including medicine, public health, psychology, and education. (from the Preface) Whether used as a brief textbook in a classroom or as a refresher for more advanced readers, BIOSTATISTICS AND EPIDEMIOLOGY has become a well-thumbed and battered resource in many a classroom, department library and lab. With the explosion of biomedical research and publishing in the past few years, understanding the statistical validity of the results of both basic research and clinical trials has never been more important. This new third edition of BIOSTATISTICS AND EPIDEMIOLOGY serves as the roadmap to understanding these complex and important topics.

Abstract

This fully updated book collects numerous data mining techniques, reflecting the acceleration and diversity of the development of data-driven approaches to the life sciences. The first half of the volume examines genomics, particularly metagenomics and epigenomics, which promise to deepen our knowledge of genes and genomes, while the second half of the book emphasizes metabolism and the metabolome as well as relevant medicine-oriented subjects. Written for the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology series, chapters include the kind of detail and expert implementation advice that is useful for getting optimal results. Authoritative and practical, Data Mining for Systems Biology: Methods and Protocols, Second Edition serves as an ideal resource for researchers of biology and relevant fields, such as medical, pharmaceutical, and agricultural sciences, as well as for the scientists and engineers who are working on developing data-driven techniques, such as databases, data sciences, data mining, visualization systems, and machine learning or artificial intelligence that now are central to the paradigm-altering discoveries being made with a higher frequency.

Abstract

Following the previous four annual conferences, the 5th Chinese Conference on Biometrics Recognition (Sinobiometrics 2004) was held in Guangzhou, China in December 2004. The conference this year was aimed at promoting the international exchange of ideas and providing an opportunity for keeping abreast of the latest developments in biometric algorithms, systems, and applications. The 1st Biometrics Verification Competition (BVC) on face, iris, and fingerprint recognition was also conducted in conjunction with the conference. This book is composed of 74 papers presented at Sinobiometrics 2004, contributed by researchers and industrial practitioners from Korea, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, France, UK, US, as well as China. Of these, 60 papers were selected from 140 submissions and 14 were invited. The papers not only presented recent technical advances, but also addressed issues in biometric system design, standardization, and applications. Included among the invited were four feature papers on the ideas and algorithms of the best-performing biometric engines, which were either competition winners at the Face Authentication Test (FAT) 2004 or the Fingerprint Verification Competition (FVC) 2004, or they were the best-performing iris and palmprint recognition algorithms. The papers were complemented by five keynote lectures on biometrics, and face, fingerprint, and iris authentication and multimodal fusion by Arun Ross (West Virginia University) and Anil K. Jain (Michigan State University), Josef Kittler (University of Surrey), John Daugman (University of Cambridge), Raffaele Cappelli (University of Bologna), and Stan Z. Li (Chinese Academy of Sciences).

Abstract

This book introduces the open source R software language that can be implemented in biostatistics for data organization, statistical analysis, and graphical presentation. In the years since the authors’ 2014 work Introduction to Data Analysis and Graphical Presentation in Biostatistics with R, the R user community has grown exponentially and the R language has increased in maturity and functionality. This updated volume expands upon skill-sets useful for students and practitioners in the biological sciences by describing how to work with data in an efficient manner, how to engage in meaningful statistical analyses from multiple perspectives, and how to generate high-quality graphics for professional publication of their research. A common theme for research in the diverse biological sciences is that decision-making depends on the empirical use of data. Beginning with a focus on data from a parametric perspective, the authors address topics such as Student t-Tests for independent samples and matched pairs; oneway and twoway analyses of variance; and correlation and linear regression. The authors also demonstrate the importance of a nonparametric perspective for quality assurance through chapters on the Mann-Whitney U Test, Wilcoxon Matched-Pairs Signed-Ranks test, Kruskal-Wallis H-Test for Oneway Analysis of Variance, and the Friedman Twoway Analysis of Variance. To address the element of data presentation, the book also provides an extensive review of the many graphical functions available with R. There are now perhaps more than 15,000 external packages available to the R community. The authors place special emphasis on graphics using the lattice package and the ggplot2 package, as well as less common, but equally useful, figures such as bean plots, strip charts, and violin plots. A robust package of supplementary material, as well as an introduction of the development of both R and the discipline of biostatistics, makes this ideal for novice learners as well as more experienced practitioners.
