Abstract

Following up the wide interest in the wake of Takaharu Tezukas TEDtalk 'The best kindergarten you've ever seen' which is among the ten most popular TEDtalks of 2015, this monograph provides further introduction to the design philosophy behind the studio's built work. The book primarily focuses on the lecture 'Beyond Architecture' which Takaharu Tezuka gave in October of 2013 at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design (GSD). Introducing Tezuka Architects seminal projects spanning the past 12 years, Takaharu explores a trajectory from the Roof House in (2001) up through the recently completed Child Chemo House in (2013). Tezuka questions our relationship to technology, suggesting that now in the 21st century, technology is integral to our existence as humans. This book illustrates the impact of design and its values on society.

Abstract

In all debates on school system reform, teaching methods, care facilities for young children or individual funding opportunities, educational objectives are almost always at the fore. The more often issues of all-day schooling and inclusion are dealt with, the more important spatial concepts and aspects of aesthetics become. Results of international performance tests and findings from the field of developmental psychology have revealed the considerable influence that quality architecture exerts – from professional handling of design, colours, light and more to one’s ability to learn, including self-determined learning and working. Therefore, the time has come for architects to deal with these issues and to familiarise themselves with the appropriate design principles. In addition to brief theoretical asides, the latest volume from the “best of Detail” series provides a wide range of completed projects – from crèche to high school and community centres for children to youth centres – that demonstrate fascinating solutions for diverse construction projects for children and adolescents.

Abstract

Drs. M.F. van Klinken

Abstract

Designing a childcare facility, whether it is a créche, kindergarten, or preschool, involves many challenges. The architect must focus on the needs of the users, who include both the children and the adult carers, while complying with a large number of rules and regulations, which are made all the more complex by the fact that they rarely reference buildings for children explicitly. But above all, the architect must create structures that optimally meet the contemporary pedagogical and architectural requirements of an institution dedicated to children. This is the first manual specially dedicated to the long-neglected kindergarten building typology. It presents 60 contemporary childcare buildings from across the world in detail, with large photos, plans, and drawings, providing deep insights into what is an exceedingly complicated design task. Moreover, the book outlines ten design parameters that architects can turn to for guidance. Finally, specialist articles by experts delve deeper into the practical considerations that are required to successfully plan, design, and operate a childcare facility.

Abstract

Meeting children at eye level is not only a question of pedagogical attitude. Designing Spaces for Children shows how architecture and interior design can promote children's development. Based on historical and current reform pedagogical concepts, design principles for the kindergarten construction are outlined, which can also be transferred to other premises such as paediatric practices. Rooms can invite you to discover, promote communication and social interaction, strengthen self-confidence and be a retreat or a raging landscape. For years, the Berlin-based architectural firm baukind has been moving creatively between the strict legal requirements and the architectural possibilities of child-friendly architecture – always with the needs of children in mind. The book presents realized projects such as the Kita Weltenbummler in Berlin and sees itself as an impetus to involve children equally in the design of our environment.
