William Golding was born in 1911 and educated at his local grammar school and Brasenose College, Oxford. He published a volume of poems in 1934 and during the war served in the Royal Navy. Afterwards he returned to being a schoolmaster in Salisbury. Lord of the Flies, his first novel, was an immediate success, and was followed by a series of remarkable novels, including The Inheritors, Pincher Martin and The Spire. He won the Booker Prize for Rites of Passage in 1980, was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1983, and was knighted in 1988. He died in 1993.

These are selected papers from the Second International William Golding Conference that was hosted by the University of Mons-Hainaut in Mons, Belgium, on 1 March 2002. I wanted to organize the Conference almost ten years after Golding’s death to have a rerun of the successful gathering of Goldingians that took place in Saint Etienne in September 1993. Already during that event, which was the First International William Golding Conference to be held in Europe, the intertextual quality of Sir William’s work was analysed through a variety of approaches. It was therefore felt that the theme of “intertextual relationships” was the best way to generate the aesthetics of darkness. And this choice indeed proved to be a success: several contributors were eager to probe the possibilities of exploring the links, albeit implicit, between specific Golding novels and the literature of their own country or the great works of world literature. The humble yet valuable task that rests on the shoulders of the critic was to be fulfilled.
