"To Be Determined: Photography and the Future proposes a radical concept: that the photograph acts and functions not only as a record of the past, but also as a device for seeing and thinking the future. Exploring a familiar medium through a new lens, this series of short essays asserts that photographic technologies and processes are geared toward a world to come, not a world that has been."--Cover

In 'One Hand Clapping', five artists from Greater China--Cao Fei, Duan Jianyu, Lin Yilin, Wong Ping and Samson Young--explore the ways in which globalization affects our understanding of the future. From a film shot at the industrial facilities of mainland China to a virtual reality intervention into the Guggenheim's iconic rotunda and musical compositions for imaginary instruments that defy the laws of physics, these works examine our systems of exchange, communication and production, and engage creatively with the future as a form of poetic revolution. Essays by the exhibition's organizers, Xiaoyu Weng and Hou Hanru, are joined by a theoretical text on technology and culture by the philosopher Yuk Hui, selected poems by millennial poets and sections presenting materials related to the commissioning process for each of the artists. Exhibition: Guggenheim Museum, New York, USA (04.05. - 21.10.2018).

This spirited exploration of the interfaces between art and theory in the 21st century brings together a multidisciplinary range of viewpoints on their future. The authors examine contemporary visual culture based on speculative predictions and creative scientific arguments. Focusing on seven themes - Future Tech, Future Image, Future Museum, Future City, Future Freedom, Future History, and Future Future - the book shows how our sense of the future is shaped by a visual rhetoric of acceleration, progression, excess and destruction. The essays reflect collaborative work between the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis at the University of Amsterdam, De Appel Arts Centre, W139–Space for Contemporary Art, and the art magazine Metropolis M. Discussing provocative themes like future history and future freedom, ‘Facing Forward’ is an energetic look at how our visions of the future affect how we depict the world around us.

Whatever happened to the space age? The exploits of Yuri Gagarin, John Glenn and Neil Armstrong ignited a worldwide obsession with futuristic living, bu where did it all go? Intense optimism for a space-age future invaded every aspect of design, from fashion and furniture to architecture and typography. But, all of a sudden, it vanished and euphoria about the future gave way to anxiety. The book charts the rise and fall of the space-age aesthetic and highlights a trend among contemporary artists to question this desceptively complex period.

[4] of cover.
