Abstract

Presenting the basics of elliptic PDEs in connection with regularity theory, the book bridges fundamental breakthroughs - such as the Krylov-Safonov and Evans-Krylov results, Caffarelli's regularity theory, and the counterexamples due to Nadirashvili and Vlăduţ - and modern developments, including improved regularity for flat solutions and the partial regularity result. After presenting this general panorama, accounting for the subtleties surrounding C-viscosity and Lp-viscosity solutions, the book examines important models through approximation methods. The analysis continues with the asymptotic approach, based on the recession operator. After that, approximation techniques produce a regularity theory for the Isaacs equation, in Sobolev and Hölder spaces. Although the Isaacs operator lacks convexity, approximation methods are capable of producing Hölder continuity for the Hessian of the solutions by connecting the problem with a Bellman equation. To complete the book, degenerate models are studied and their optimal regularity is described.

Abstract

This book gives a comprehensive introduction to those parts of the theory of elliptic integrals and elliptic functions which provide illuminating examples in complex analysis, but which are not often covered in regular university courses. These examples form prototypes of major ideas in modern mathematics and were a driving force of the subject in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. In addition to giving an account of the main topics of the theory, the book also describes many applications, both in mathematics and in physics. For the reader’s convenience, all necessary preliminaries on basic notions such as Riemann surfaces are explained to a level sufficient to read the book. For each notion a clear motivation is given for its study, answering the question ‘Why do we consider such objects?’, and the theory is developed in a natural way that mirrors its historical development (e.g., ‘If there is such and such an object, then you would surely expect this one’). This feature sets this text apart from other books on the same theme, which are usually presented in a different order. Throughout, the concepts are augmented and clarified by numerous illustrations. Suitable for undergraduate and graduate students of mathematics, the book will also be of interest to researchers who are not familiar with elliptic functions and integrals, as well as math enthusiasts. .

Abstract

This self-contained encyclopedic monograph gives a detailed introduction to Bézout equations and stable ranks, encompassing and explaining needed topological, analytical, and algebraic tools and methods. Some of the highlights included are Carleson's corona theorem and the Bass, topological, and matricial stable ranks. The first volume focusses on topological structures, Banach algebras, and advanced function theory, thus preparing the stage for the algebraic structures in the second volume towards examining stable ranks with analytic methods. The main emphasis is laid on algebras of holomorphic functions. Often a new approach is presented or at least a different angle of sight, which makes the book attractive both for researchers and students interested in these active fields of research.

Abstract

From the reviews: "The author, who with Spencer created the theory of deformations of a complex manifold, has written a book which will be of service to all who are interested in this by now vast subject. Although intended for a reader with a certain mathematical maturity, the author begins at the beginning, [...]. This is a book of many virtues: mathematical, historical, and pedagogical. Parts of it could be used for a graduate complex manifolds course." J.A. Carlson in Mathematical Reviews, 1987 "There are many mathematicians, or even physicists, who would find this book useful and accessible, but its distinctive attribute is the insight it gives into a brilliant mathematician's work. [...] It is intriguing to sense between the lines Spencer's optimism, Kodaira's scepticism or the shadow of Grauert with his very different methods, as it is to hear of the surprises and ironies which appeared on the way. Most of all it is a piece of work which shows mathematics as lying somewhere between discovery and invention, a fact which all mathematicians know, but most inexplicably conceal in their work." N.J. Hitchin in the Bulletin of the London Mathematical Society, 1987.

Abstract

This monograph offers the first systematic treatment of the theory of minimal surfaces in Euclidean spaces by complex analytic methods, many of which have been developed in recent decades as part of the theory of Oka manifolds (the h-principle in complex analysis). It places particular emphasis on the study of the global theory of minimal surfaces with a given complex structure. Advanced methods of holomorphic approximation, interpolation, and homotopy classification of manifold-valued maps, along with elements of convex integration theory, are implemented for the first time in the theory of minimal surfaces. The text also presents newly developed methods for constructing minimal surfaces in minimally convex domains of Rn, based on the Riemann–Hilbert boundary value problem adapted to minimal surfaces and holomorphic null curves. These methods also provide major advances in the classical Calabi–Yau problem, yielding in particular minimal surfaces with the conformal structure of any given bordered Riemann surface. Offering new directions in the field and several challenging open problems, the primary audience of the book are researchers (including postdocs and PhD students) in differential geometry and complex analysis. Although not primarily intended as a textbook, two introductory chapters surveying background material and the classical theory of minimal surfaces also make it suitable for preparing Masters or PhD level courses.
