In Creation and Contemplation, Julien Decharneux explores the connections between the cosmology of the Qur’ān and various cosmological traditions of Late Antiquity, with a focus on Syriac Christianity. The first part of the book studies how, in exhorting its audience to contemplate the world, the Qur’ān carries on a tradition of natural contemplation that had developed throughout Late Antiquity in the Christian world. In this regard, the analysis suggests particularly striking connections with the mystical and ascetic literature of the Church of the East, which was in effervescence at the time of the emergence of Islam. The second part argues that the Qur’ānic cosmological discourse is built so as to serve the overarching theological message of the text, namely God’s absolute unity. Despite the allusive, and sometimes obscure, way in which the Qur’ān talks about the world’s coming into being and its maintenance in existence, the text betrays its authors’ acquaintance with cosmological debates of Late Antiquity. In studying the Qur’ān through the prism of Late Antiquity, this book contributes to our understanding of the emergence of Islam and its relationship with other religious traditions of the time.

The contributors to this volume explore the phenomena of authorship, attribution, and author function in literature produced in the ancient Mediterranean. Moving beyond traditional questions regarding forgery or authorial (in)authenticity, they analyze the roles that ascribed authorship plays in the production of textual networks, the construction of authoritative figures, and the history of literary culture and book culture. They include scholars whose work on authorship and attribution is mutually informative beyond disciplinary boundaries, particularly scholars of early Christianity, early Judaism, classics, and the ancient Near East.

Reinhard Feldmeier interprets biblical statements on the Spirit of God in the context of ancient religious and intellectual history, thereby revealing its fundamental significance for early Christianity and the ensuing need to "test the spirits". By holding the critical mirror of biblical testimonies up to the Spirit-forgetfulness of churches in the northern hemisphere and to the overemphasis of some churches in the Global South, his intention is to stimulate further theological reflection. The Holy Spirit is often granted only a minor role in many churches andtheologies. Yet in the Global South, where Christianity-in contrast to Europe and North America-is constantly expanding, the Spirit plays the leading role in Pentecostal and Neo-Pentecostal denominations, as well as in the charismatic renewal movements of the mainline churches. Reinhard Feldmeier engages that tension in the form of an exegetical study which interprets the biblical witnesses in the context of the religious and intellectual history of ancient Judaism and Graeco-Roman antiquity. Against this background, Feldmeier demonstrates both the fundamental significance of the Holy Spirit in early Christianity and the necessity of "testing the spirits" which it entailed. In this way, the author seeks to hold up the critical mirror of the biblical testimonies both to the Spirit-forgetfulness of churches in the northern hemisphere and to the overemphasis of some churches in the Global South and thus to provide both with impulses for further theological reflection.

"How did Scripture influence the ancient Christian creeds? Did the earliest precursors to the creeds influence the formation of Scripture itself? Were Christians the only people in antiquity who made creeds, as has often been alleged? The authors of this volume investigate the relationship between Scripture and the creeds." --

Academic journal which aims at encouraging the dialogue between scholars of church history, history of religion, and classical antiquity with all its subdisciplines (classical and Christian Near Eastern philology, ancient history, classical and Christian archaeology, as well as the history of ancient philosophy and religion). In this context, ancient Christianity is understood in its complete prosopographic and doxographic breadth, with special emphasis on the influences of peripheral groups and related movements.
