This is a major revision and update of Nevins' earlier classic and is an ideal text for use with undergraduate students in a wide variety of courses on immigration, transnational issues, and the politics of race, inclusion and exclusion. Not only has the author brought his subject completely up to date, but as a "case" of increasing economic integration and liberalization along with growing immigration control, the US. / Mexico Border and its history is put in a wider global context of similar development s elsewhere--Product description.

Territorial borders are taking on a new significance, the implications of which are relatively unexplored within the discipline of criminology. This book presents the first systematic attempt to develop a critical criminology of the border and offers a unique treatment of the impact of globalisation and mobility. It focuses on borders and the significance of the activities which take place on and around them. For many the border is an everyday reality, a space in which to live, a land necessary to cross. For states the border space increasingly requires protection and defence; is at the centre of state ideology and performance; is the site for investing significant political and material resources, and is ultimately ungovernable. Providing a wealth of case material from Australia, Europe and North America, it is for students, academics, and practitioners working in the areas of criminology, migration, human geography, international law and politics, globalisation, sociology and cultural anthropology. "Borders, Mobility and Technologies of Control provides a model of criminological inquiry that is global in scope, constructionist in vision, and capable of combining the insights of dialogic and political-economic analyses into a holistic understanding of the growing conflict between nation-states and multitudes. This book is an important, new step forward for all those who approach criminology, not as an adjunct to state control, but as sociological inquiry in pursuit of human justice". Dr. Raymond Michalowski, Arizona Regents Professor, Northern Arizona University, USA "Borders, mobility and technologies of control is a radical exploration of new terrain in transnational and comparative criminology. Crossing disciplinary boundaries, this collection charts new forms of transgression and control in the borderlands, raising new theoretical questions and topics for research." Ben Bowling, Professor of Criminology & Criminal Justice, King's College, London.

"We're going to build a wall." Borders have been drawn since the beginning of time, but in recent years artificial barriers have become increasingly significant to the political conversation across the world. Donald Trump was elected President of the United States while promising to build a wall on the Mexico border, and in Europe, the international movements of migrants and refugees have sparked fierce discussion about whether and how countries should restrict access to their territory by erecting physical barriers. Virtual walls are also built and crushed at increasing speed. In the post-9/11 era there is a greater danger from so-called "transnational non-state actors", and computer hacking and cyberterrorism threaten to overwhelm our technological barriers. In this timely and original book, Said Saddiki scrutinises the physical and virtual walls located in four continents, including Israel, India, the southern EU border, Morocco, and the proposed border wall between Mexico and the US. Saddiki's detailed analysis explores the tensions between the rise of globalisation, which some have argued will lead to a "borderless world" and "the end of the nation-state", and the rapid development in recent decades of border control systems. Saddiki examines both regular and irregular cross-border activities, including the flow of people, goods, ideas, drugs, weapons, capital, and information, and explores the disparities that are reflected by barriers to such activities. He considers the consequences of the construction of physical and virtual walls, including their impact on international relations and the rise of the multi-billion dollar security market. World of Walls: The Structure, Roles and Effectiveness of Separation Barriers is important reading for all those interested in the topics of immigration, border security, international relations, and policy.

This book provides a comprehensive study of border control: from data analysis and information warfare, frameworks for command and control, and game-theoretic risk management, up to the (optimal) deployment of law enforcement missions. Innovative about this book is that it approaches the subject from several angles, aiming to connect theory and practice of law enforcement missions with risk management and/ or quantitative modelling. Some chapters focus on legal challenges and information warfare, while others provide quantitative modelling of military asset deployment in the area of interest, or show the benefits of cooperative wireless sensor networks for border control. A case study of the Dutch Border Security Team supplements the theory. The publication is ideally suited for reference use by students, academicians, researchers and professionals in the field of border control and related areas. H. Monsuur is Professor of Military Operations Research, J.M. Jansen is Associate Professor of Operational ICT, and F.J. Marchal is Lecturer of International/Military Law at the Faculty of Military Sciences of the Netherlands Defence Academy in Den Helder, The Netherlands.

Looking at fiction and nonfiction by citizen journalists and undocumented writers, Caminero-Santangelo finds that latino/a writers increasingly express a sense of solidarity with undocumented immigrants. She also notes, however, that the literary and narrative response is far from heterogeneous.
