A 2016 residency at Grand-Hornu allowed LaToya to pursue her work on post-industrial society in Belgium, turning her camera to the Borinage, a mining region whose intense activity in the 19th century was diminished by a series of crises that led to the closure of the last mine in 1976. Testimonies gathered by Frazier from the former miners and their families have resulted in And from the Coaltips a Tree Will Rise, an extensive collection of portraits, landscapes and still lifes. LaToya Ruby Frazier grew up in Braddock, in the suburbs of Pittsburgh, at the heart of the Rust Belt. The Bottom refers to the lower, poorest part of the town which is closest to the Edgar Thomson Plant, founded in 1872 by Andrew Carnegie. It was here that aged sixteen, LaToya Ruby Frazier became aware of the need to bear witness to the impact of deindustrialisation on the Afro-American community. She did so by photographing her family through three generations of women (her grandmother, her mother and herself), along with the landscapes of this former flagship of the steel industry which had by then been abandoned. Braddock's recent history, forged by resurgent waves of unemployment, mounting poverty, demographic decline, the appearance of diseases, hospital closures, are inscribed on the bodies and landscapes which LaToya Ruby Frazier juxtaposes in The Notion of Family. Laying claim to the heritage of socio-documentary photography initiated by the FSA (Farm Security Administration), LaToya Ruby Frazier adds to this archive of working-class reality begun in the 1930s by Walker Evans, Dorothea Lange, Gordon Parks and others, capturing the town's and her own family's history from the inside-which is what makes her work unique. Her political engagement and struggle against social inequalities are revealed in her rigorous photographic framing. Given this conceptual aspect, her photography reaches far beyond what is strictly considered as documentation.

The Notion of Family, offers an incisive exploration of the legacy of racism and economic decline in America's small towns, as embodied by her hometown of Braddock, Pennsylvania. The work also considers the impact of that decline on the community and on her family, creating a statement both personal and truly political-- an intervention in the histories and narratives of the region. Frazier has compellingly set her story of three generations--her Grandma Ruby, her mother, and herself--against larger questions of civic belonging and responsibility. The work documents her own struggles and interactions with family and the expectations of community, and includes the documentation of the demise of Braddock's only hospital, reinforcing the idea that the history of a place is frequently written on the body as well as the landscape.

Avec l'art contemporain, par un retournement de situation politique né de la contre-culture occidentale des sixties, le musée a cessé d'être aux mains des seuls conservateurs et commissaires pour passer également entre celles des artistes. Dans cet esprit utopique ou subversif, le modèle muséal est devenu la cible d'actes créatifs, parfois violents, visant à le vivifier, à le rendre plus proche de la nature, de la réalité sociale, mais aussi du vécu personnel. Avec peu de moyens, comme le sculpteur afro-américain Noah Purifoy, ou avec l'appui de puissants mécènes, comme le sculpteur Rei Naito et l'architecte Ryue Nishizawa, le musée s'est éloigné parfois du chaos des villes pour s'installer dans un désert aride ou sur une île paradisiaque. Démasqué comme une institution autoritaire conditionnant notre regard et contrôlant l'histoire, celle racontée par les vainqueurs, il a vu aussi ses dispositifs d'exposition, indépendamment de sa mission (ethnographie, histoire de l'art, zoologie), minés par les interventions de Fred Wilson, renversés par les constructions de Wesley Meuris, parodiés par les pastiches de Jacques Charlier ou encore détournés par Christoph Büchel qui transforme ses salles en centre pour réfugiés. Enfin, cette étude de cas où le musée est pris pour cible ne serait complète sans la résistance que Tamar Guimarães, Fiona Tan et Dayanita Singh opposent à l'inertie des collections, en mobilisant la mémoire des images au sein de musées imaginaires, poétiques ou encore portatifs, à l'instar du Nanomuseum conçu par Hans-Ulrich Obrist.

There is a lot of casual talk about photography, just as there is a lot of casual photography. But there have always been articulate voices, able to see past the obvious, around the distracting, and through the trivial to say something about the more profound aspects of the medium. Many of those voices have belonged to image makers.0The critic and exhibitions curator David Campany, often invited by photographers and museums to write about their practice during his career, talked with world-class artists - Adam Broomberg and Oliver Chanarin, Daniel Blaufuks, Robert Cumming, LaToya Ruby Frazier, Lewis Baltz, John Stezaker, Paul Graham, Rut Blees Luxemburg, Jeff Wall, Lucas Blalock, Susan Meiselas, Victor Burgin, William Klein, Stephen Shore - to interrogate them about their past, the various creative phases they crossed over, and above all their rapport with photographic medium and reality. That is why these conversations transcend the dimension of the simple interview to reveal the close connection between art and author photography, between photography and the world, between thought and speech. Because, as noted by the author in his introduction, "whether long or short, nearly all these conversations were open-ended. Neither party knew where we might be going or where things would end up. For me, that is always the real value of a conversation, as opposed to an interview (or a questionnaire). There is risk and excitement, a sense of mutual exploration and speculation."
