« Durant ces cinquante dernières années, bien des tempêtes secouèrent le navire franco-allemand, mais sans jamais interrompre durablement le mouvement en avant. Approfondir l’amitié entre nos deux pays et faire l’unité politique de l’Europe, ce n’est pas, dans notre esprit, oublier les identités françaises ou allemandes et renoncer à leur donner toute leur vitalité. Car il ne peut y avoir de grand dessein sans que nos communautés nationales soient vivantes et renforcées par une cohésion citoyenne et sociale. Rester fidèle à soi-même, aborder le monde tel qu’il est, retrouver une ambition qui serait commune à nos deux pays et fondée sur la compréhension mutuelle et sur la fraternité, tel est le devoir que s’étaient assigné les générations en charge des responsabilités depuis la fin de la guerre jusqu’à aujourd’hui. Tel est le flambeau que nous souhaiterions transmettre aux jeunes générations qui, sans rien oublier du passé, sont nées dans un monde relativement nouveau et doivent imprimer leur propre marque à l’événement à venir.
