Abstract

The scope and importance of hip fractures is almost incomprehensible. With a world wide incidence of close to 2 million cases per year, theses fractures pose a daunting challenge to our ability to affect and treat this epidemic. Basics for operative treatment of proximal and distal femur fractures: Clear surgical indication Short planning and preparation < 24 h Full weight bearing osteosynthesis Early mobilisation and physiotherapy In comprehensive form the book presents the usage of a meanwhile well installed implant (DMS) for osteosynthesis technique in the peritrochanteric region. The „double dynamic" stabilization (sliding tongue principle and angle adapted contoured fit) means a state of the art fracture treatment procedure. It is a convincing alternative to achieve a biological osteosynthesis at the femur. The system includes an infinitely adjustable, flexible angle, dynamic plate with a tubular distal part.

Abstract

Seeing is believing. This is the title of a new campaign promoted by the International Agency for Prevention of Blindness to raise funds to help tackle avoidable loss of sight in poorly developed countries, truly an admirable initiative. This book could have used a similar leitmotiv: if you see what happens inside of a joint, you will be able to believe in your patient’s symptoms. But it would not be right. Arthroscopy is not out there just to make a diagnosis; it was not developed just to certify that the patient’s complaints are based on something physical. Arthroscopy was introduced to help patients, to make our treatments more reliable, to have better control of our procedures. It is merely a tool, indeed, but a marvelous one which nobody should und- score among all surgical options we have when it comes to solving wrist trauma. Seeing is understanding. This could be another leitmotiv for these authors’ campaign to get more hand surgeons to incorporate arthroscopy in their practices. Certainly, mastering these newly developed techniques help understanding the patient’s problems. But again, that statement would also be misleading for not always what we see through the scope is the real cause of dysfunction. The enemy may be outside of the capsular enclosure. Indeed, arthroscopy provides lots of useful information, but the surgeon need not accept biased interpretations of the patient’s problem based only on what appears on the screen.

Abstract

Practical Procediures in Orthopaedic Surgery covers the most common procedures that a surgeon in training is expected to perform during his residency program for the pelvic ring and the lower extremity. Each procedure has been written by an expert or under a supervision of an expert. Each chapter provides such useful information to the trainee as indications, clinical and radiological assessment, surgical approach, implant positioning, tips and tricks, post-operative complications to be aware of, mode of mobilisation and the time intervals of outpatient follow up. Intra-operative pictures have been incorporated to allow the surgeon to be aware of all the important issues and steps involved for each procedure.
