Abstract

Proceedings of sessions of the GeoShanghai Conference, held in Shanghai, China, June 6-8, 2006. Hosted by Shanghai Society of Civil Engineering, China. In cooperation with the Geo-Institute of ASCE; Georgia Institute of Technology; and University of Kansas. This Geotechnical Special Publication contains 44 papers covering recent advances in the research and construction of shallow foundations, pile foundations, and limit state design. A keynote paper by Professor Harry Poulos summarizes recent advances in the settlement of pile groups. A section of 15 papers addresses statistical applications and the use of limit state design for foundations. Another section of 25 papers on deep foundations describe a series of advances in the estimation of pile capacity and pile installation issues. The final section includes three papers that focus on advances in the estimation of settlement associated with shallow foundations.

Abstract

This book presents a complete how-to procedure for the design of shallow foundations commonly used with low-rise structures of today's building codes. It offers a detailed presentation of both soils and structures specifically as they relate to shallow foundations, emphasizing soil-structure interaction by matching particular structural designs to particular soil conditions. For soils, the author describes relevant soil properties and soil mechanics at shallow depths. For structures, the author includes a summary of loads on foundations and the deformations produced by such loads. Design procedures apply to structures less than 65 feet tall and having a natural period of oscillation less than 0.90 seconds. Structural systems include low-rise diaphragm/shearpanel systems, braced frames, and rigid frames. These established and proven methods apply to industries of architecture, construction, engineering technology, as well as civil engineering, and are intended for use by both students and practitioners.

Abstract

Masonry is a construction material that has been used throughout the years as a structural or non-structural component in buildings. Masonry can be described as a composite material made up of different units and diverse types of arrangements, with or without mortar, that is used in many ancient public buildings, as well as with the latest technologies being applied in construction. Research in multiple relevant fields, as well as crossing structural with non-structural needs, is crucial for understanding the qualities of existent buildings and to develop new products and construction technologies. This book addresses and promotes the discussion related to the different topics addressing the use of masonry in the construction sciences and in practice, including theory and research, numerical approaches and technical applications in new works, and repair actions and interventions in the built environment, connecting theory and application across topics from academia to industry.
