In this first book of interviews with visual artists from across Texas, more than sixty artists reflect on topics from formative influences and inspirations to their common engagement with found materials. Beyond the art itself, no source is more primary to understanding art and artist than the artist's own words. After all, who can speak with more authority about the artist's influences, motivations, methods, philosophies, and creations? Since 2010, Robert Craig Bunch has interviewed sixty-four of Texas' finest artists, who have responded with honesty, clarity, and-naturally-great insight into their own work. None of these interviews has been previously published, even in part. Incorporating a striking, full-color illustration of each artist's work, these absorbing self-examinations will stand collectively as a reference of lasting value.

© NBD Biblion

"American artist Jared Bark began putting up stacks of books in the fields and woods on his farm [in Warwick, NY] in 2012. All he had was an image in his mind's eye of a column of books standing at the edge of a field surrounded by trees. After working on the outdoor stacks, Jared Bark brought the project indoors to his studio, making all sorts of different stacks: colorful ones, burned ones, effaced one... More recently, Bark has been constructing vertical stacks of books that are then run through a sawmill to become acant, a term for a log that has been milled on all four sides. The slender verticality of the sculptures reference both the trees from which paper is made and the ancient freestanding columns Bark experienced in Pompeii. Book of Stacks, Stacks of Books gathers for the first time in a book a comprehensive selection of the stacks Bark has been making over the past decade."--publisher.

Can an artist claim that an object is a work of art if it has been made for him or her by someone else? If so, who is the author of such a work? And just what is the difference between a work of art and a work of craft? In the first book of its kind, Michael Petry tackles these questions head on.

Explore two essential textile-art concepts with leading artist Shelley Rhodes. Fragmentation and repair are two of the biggest buzzwords in textile and mixedmedia art, and in this fascinating and beautiful book renowned textile artist Shelley Rhodes explores both concepts, with a wealth of fresh ideas, practical advice and inspiring examples from her own work and from embroiderers around the world, including Debbie Lyddon and Alice Fox. Fragmentation lies at the heart of Shelley's work, and she shows how she deconstructs and reassembles cloth, paper and objects to create new pieces, incorporating found objects and materials she has collected over the years to add a personal note. She covers using salvaged and recycled materials, repurposing household items, and methods of distressing and manipulating surfaces by burning, piercing, rust-dyeing and even composting. She also shows how larger pieces of work can be cut up and the components worked on individually to form a series of smaller works with strong visual impact. Special attention is given to darning and patching, traditionally seen simply as ways to prolong the life of garments but now appreciated as meaningful and decorative techniques in their own right, and Shelley also investigates the Japanese concepts of wabi-sabi (finding beauty in imperfection) and mottainai (using every last scrap), both of which constantly inform her work. This beautifully illustrated book is the ideal companion for any textile artist wanting to bring notions of fragility, fragmentation and repair into their own work.

For centuries books have contained and presented the written words that have allowed humankind to study and interpret the world. As texts have become readily available through different media, contemporary artists have been increasingly exploring the interplay between the function, structure, and format of books. Book Art is a stunning documentation of current art, installation, and design created with and from books. The fascinating range of examples, which is as diverse as books themselves, offers eloquent proof that—despite or because of digital media’s inroads as sources of text information—the book’s legacy as a carrier of ideas and communication is being expanded today.
