Britain's pagan past, with its mysterious monuments, atmospheric sites, enigmatic artifacts, bloodthirsty legends, and cryptic inscriptions, is both enthralling and perplexing to a resident of the twenty-first century. In this ambitious and thoroughly up-to-date book, Ronald Hutton reveals the long development, rapid suppression, and enduring cultural significance of paganism, from the Paleolithic Era to the coming of Christianity. He draws on an array of recently discovered evidence and shows how new findings have radically transformed understandings of belief and ritual in Britain before the arrival of organized religion. Setting forth a chronological narrative, Hutton along the way makes side visits to explore specific locations of ancient pagan activity. He includes the well-known sacred sites-Stonehenge, Avebury, Seahenge, Maiden Castle, Anglesey-as well as more obscure locations across the mainland and coastal islands. In tireless pursuit of the elusive "why" of pagan behavior, Hutton astonishes with the breadth of his understanding of Britain's deep past and inspires with the originality of his insights.

In recent years, new areas of Egyptological research have opened up, and aspects briefly examined in the past have come under more concentrated focus. Chariot construction, harnesses and equipment, and the use of chariots, especially in battle, have been well-examined and understood, but the driving force of the chariot ? the horse ? has been overlooked, until now. This publication sheds light, for the first time, on the real origins of the Egyptian horse and tells the story of its journey to the valley of the Nile. Using the beauty and the informative detail contained in a myriad of tombs and temples, as well as the osteological evidence, Dr Turner has revealed the nature and appearance of the Egyptian horse and the changes that took place in it over time as the Egyptians mastered its use and adapted it to their specific needs.00As Egypt began to adapt to this new resource, ownership and use of the horse percolated through the social hierarchy from the pharaoh downwards. It avoided mundane uses and always remained a special creature, instilled with spirit, energy and prestige, and a particular source of pride for those fortunate enough to possess a chariot team. Egypt was irrevocably changed by the arrival of the horse, Equus Caballus. Aggressive kings used massed chariot divisions to create and expand Egypt's New Kingdom empire. New occupations and new logistical activities and technologies developed to support them, and the appreciation of the horse per se seeped into art and literature.

Sennacherib and his ill-fated siege of Jerusalem fascinated the ancient world. Twelve scholars—in Hebrew Bible, Assyriology, archaeology, Egyptology, Classics, Aramaic, Rabbinic and Christian literatures—examine how and why the Sennacherib story was told and re-told in more than a dozen cultures for over a thousand years. From Akkadian to Arabic, stories and legends about Sennacherib became the first vernacular tales of the imperial world. These essays address outstanding historical issues of the campaign and the sources, and press on to expose the stories’ theological and cultural roles in inner-cultural dialogues, ethnic origin stories, and morality tales. This book is the first of its kind for readers seeking out historical and historiographic bridges between the ancient and late antique worlds. 'This work will undoubtedly serve as an important resource on the Assyrian attack on Jerusalem in 701...' Song-Mi Suzie Park, Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, Horizons in Biblical Theology

"The prehistories of Britain and Ireland are inescapably entwined with continental European narratives. The central aim here is to explore 'cross-channel' relationships throughout later prehistory, investigating the archaeological links (material, social, cultural) between the areas we now call Britain and Ireland, and continental Europe, from the Mesolithic through to the end of the Iron Age. In approaching the subject of 'continental connections' in the long-term, and by bringing a variety of different archaeological perspectives (associated with different periods) to bear on it, this volume provides a new a new synthesis of the ebbs and flows of the cross-channel relationship over the course of 15,000 years of later prehistory, enabling fresh understandings and new insights to emerge about the intimately linked trajectories of change in both regions"--Provided by publisher.
