Abstract

Explores several core biological areas that have influenced modern forensic science; Entomology ("bugs") is a specialty that uses knowledge about insect life cycles to inform death investigations. Botany ("plants") is a specialty that looks at plant materials as evidence in cases. The "blood" section covers the identification of blood and body fluids (determining their origin as human or animal), DNA typing, and blood-spatter patterns.

Abstract

"Today, forensic botany encompasses numerous subdisciplines of plant science: plant anatomy and dendrochronology, systematics, ecology, limnology and oceanography, statistics, palynology, and molecular biology. Forensic Plant Science presents chapters on plant science evidence, plant anatomy, plant taxonomic evidence, plant ecology, case studies for all of the above, as well as the educational pathways for the future of forensic plant science."--Page 4 of cover.

Abstract

Forensic Ecogenomics: The Application of Microbial Ecology Analyses in Forensic Contexts provides intelligence on important topics, including environmental sample provenance, how to indicate the body decomposition timeline to support postmortem interval (PMI) and postmortem submersion interval (PMSI) estimates, and how to enhance identification of clandestine and transit grave locations. A diverse group of international experts have come together to present a clear perspective of forensic ecogenomics that encapsulates cutting-edge, topical and relevant cross-disciplinary approaches vital to the field. Considers the effects of decomposition on bacterial, fungal and mesofaunal populations in pristine ecosystemsExamines the role of the microbiome, necrobiome and thanatomicrobiome in postmortem interval estimationsFocuses on the application of different analytical techniques across forensics to enhance/expand the crime scene investigation toolkitWritten by a wide range of international experts in their respective fields.

Abstract

"Forensic DNA Trace Evidence Interpretation: Activity Level Propositions and Likelihood Ratios provides all foundational information required for a reader to understand the practice of evaluating forensic biology evidence given activity level propositions, and to implement the practice into active casework within a forensic institution. The book begins by explaining basic concepts and foundational theory, pulling together research and studies that have accumulated in forensic journal literature over the last 20 years. The book explains the laws of probability, showing how they can used to derive, from first principles, the likelihood ratio, used throughout the book to express the strength of evidence for any evaluation. Concepts such as the hierarchy of propositions, the difference between experts working in an investigative or evaluative mode, and the practice of case assessment and interpretation are explained to provide the reader a broad grounding in the topics that are important to understanding evaluation of evidence. Activity level evaluations are discussed in relation to biological material transferred from one object to another, the ability for biological material to persist on an item for a period of time or through an event, the ability to recover the biological material from the object when sampled for forensic testing, and the expectations of the prevalence of biological material on objects in our environment. These concepts of transfer, persistence, prevalence, and recovery are discussed in detail in addition to the factors that affect each of them. The authors go on to explain the evaluation process: how to structure case information and how to formulate propositions. This includes how a likelihood ratio formula can be derived to evaluate the forensic findings, introducing Bayesian Networks and explaining what they represent and how they can be used in evaluations, and showing how evaluation can be tested for robustness. Using these tools, the authors also demonstrate the ways that the methods used in activity level evaluations are applied to questions about body fluids. There are also chapters dedicated to reporting of results and implementation of activity level evaluation in a working forensic laboratory. Throughout the book four cases are used as examples to demonstrate how to relate the theory to practice and detail how laboratories can integrate and implement activity level evaluation into their active casework"--

Abstract

"Microbial Forensics, Third Edition serves as a complete reference on the discipline, describing the advances, challenges and opportunities that are integral in applying science to help solve future biocrimes. New chapters include: Microbial Source Tracking, Clinical Recognition, Bioinformatics, and Quality Assurance. This book is intended for a wide audience, but will be indispensable to forensic scientists and researchers interested in contributing to the growing field of microbial forensics. Biologists and microbiologists, the legal and judicial system, and the international community involved with Biological Weapons Treaties will also find this volume invaluable"--

Abstract

"Mass Identifications: Statistical Methods in Forensic Genetics summarizes the state-of-the-art in the field, including methods and recent development in genetics (sequencing). The book's authors focus on practical applications and implementation, helping readers determine how to approach the problem to identify individuals using DNA and statistically summarize evidence. Written by leading experts in the field for forensic scientists, geneticists, forensic anthropologists, and pathologists working with identifications, the book is ideal for scientists and practitioners in many areas."--Amazon.
