Abstract

Entrepreneurship has attracted global interest for its potential to catalyze economic and social development. Research suggesting that certain entrepreneurial mindsets and skills can be learned has given rise to the field of entrepreneurship education and training (EET). Despite the growth of EET, global knowledge about these programs and their impact remains thin. In response, this study surveys the available literature and program evaluations to propose a Conceptual Framework for understanding the EET program landscape. The study finds that EET today consists of a heterogeneous mix of progra

Abstract

The challenges of education development in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) at the beginning of the 21st century are urgent and unprecedented. Faced with persistent gaps in the coverage of primary schooling, almost all countries have launched major efforts to ensure that all children will have the opportunity to complete primary education of acceptable quality. Concurrently, accelerating economic growth and social change are creating an urgent imperative to expand access to further learning to strengthen the human resources base. This report provides a timely resource on good practices and potential solutions for developing and sustaining high-quality secondary education systems in African countries. It contains elements of a roadmap for improving the responsiveness of Africa's secondary education systems to the challenges of the 21st century. Its main objective is to facilitate policy dialogue within African countries and between those countries and their development partners. This book addresses issues concerning the education of youth about 12 to 18 years old. It draws on the outcomes of the Secondary Education in Africa (SEIA) initiative, which supported workshops in Kampala, Dakar, and Accra and commissioned eight thematic studies and several background papers underpinning key sections of this book. The emphasis is on general junior and senior secondary education, complementing earlier work on skills development in Sub-Saharan Africa. Secondary education has generally been neglected in education policy and practice. This is now changing, but still suffers from being addressed separately from other parts of the system. What are needed are secondary education plans that are integrated with longer-term national plans for education development. (worlbank.org)

Abstract

This working paper discusses equity and efficiency issues in secondary education transitions in Sub-Saharan Africa. Its main purpose is to identify and analyze national, regional, and local measures that may lead to the development of more efficient and seamless transitions between post-primary education pathways. In most African countries student transition from primary to junior secondary is still accompanied by significant repetition and dropout. Transitions within the secondary cycle also cause significant losses and should use more effective assessment and selection methodologies.According

Abstract

Inequity is the central challenge facing basic education in Ghana and undercuts the potential contribution of basic education to Ghana's national development goals. Persistent disparities in education service delivery and inequitable allocation of resources in Ghana lead to highly inequitable educational outcomes. These inequities negatively affect system quality, efficiency and accountability and ultimately undermine broader national development. Wide-spread inequity in education service delivery significantly depresses system learning outcomes. This report describes a ""missing middle"" in t

Abstract

Education systems in many of the world's poorest countries are now experiencing the aftermath of the global economic downturn. This report argues that the crisis could create a lost generation of children whose life chances will have been irreparably damaged by a failure to protect their right to education. It examines who these children are and why they are being left behind, and looks at concrete solutions for making sure that no children are excluded from schooling.--Publisher's description.
