Abstract

The third edition of this article on the modelling and simulation of the flow in human hearts supplements earlier editions. It discusses the flow-structure coupled heart model KAHMO FSI (Karlsruhe Heart Model) and examines patient-specific clinical application of the heart model for cardiac surgery. The KAHMO heart model can be used to predict flow losses and flow structures due to pathalogical ventricle defects. These are considered before and after surgery.

Abstract

Creating numerical groundwater models of field problems requires careful attention to describing the problem domain, selecting boundary conditions, assigning model parameters, and calibrating the model. This unique text describes the science and art of applying numerical models of groundwater flow and advective transport of solutes. Key Features * Explains how to formulate a conceptual model of a system and how to translate it into a numerical model * Includes the application of modeling principles with special attention to the finite difference flow codes PLASM and MODFLOW, and the finite-element code AQUIFEM-1 * Covers model calibration, verification, and validation * Discusses pathline analysis for tracking contaminants with reference to newly developed particle tracking codes * Makes extensive use of case studies and problems

Abstract

This master thesis consists of developing an automated powder transfer system for industrial additive manufacturing printers.Current systems only allow a limited amount of powder to be loaded into additive manufacturing printers. Therefore, it is necessary to interrupt the additive manufacturing process so that an operator can reload the powder in the printers. This interruption is counterproductive and can also impact the quality of the printed part as it disturbs its thermal balance. A system will therefore be developed to load the powder in an automated manner.

Abstract

This open access book presents the findings of Collaborative Research Center Transregio 40 (TRR40), initiated in July 2008 and funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). Gathering innovative design concepts for thrust chambers and nozzles, as well as cutting-edge methods of aft-body flow control and propulsion-component cooling, it brings together fundamental research undertaken at universities, testing carried out at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and industrial developments from the ArianeGroup. With a particular focus on heat transfer analyses and novel cooling concepts for thermally highly loaded structures, the book highlights the aft-body flow of the space transportation system and its interaction with the nozzle flow, which are especially critical during the early phase of atmospheric ascent. Moreover, it describes virtual demonstrators for combustion chambers and nozzles, and discusses their industrial applicability. As such, it is a timely resource for researchers, graduate students and practitioners. .

Abstract

Modeling micrometric and nanometric suspensions remains a major issue. They help to model the mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties, among others, of the suspensions, and then of the resulting product, in a controlled way, when considered in material formation. In some cases, they can help to improve the energy transport performance. The optimal use of these products is based on an accurate prediction of the flow-induced properties of the suspensions and, consequently, of the resulting products and parts. The final properties of the resulting micro-structured fluid or solid are radically different from the simple mixing rule. In this book, we found numerous works addressing the description of these specific fluid behaviors.

Abstract

This open access book reports on cutting-edge electrical engineering and microelectronics solutions to foster and support digitalization in the semiconductor industry. Based on the outcomes of the European project iDev40, which were presented at the two first conference editions of the European Advances in Digital Transformation Conference (EADCT 2018 and EADTC 2019), the book covers different, multidisciplinary aspects related to digital transformation, including technological and industrial developments, as well as human factors research and applications. Topics include modeling and simulation methods in semiconductor operations, supply chain management issues, employee training methods and workplaces optimization, as well as smart software and hardware solutions for semiconductor manufacturing. By highlighting industrially relevant developments and discussing open issues related to digital transformation, the book offers a timely, practice-oriented guide to graduate students, researchers and professionals interested in the digital transformation of manufacturing domains and work environments. .

Abstract

The aim of carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) is to reduce the amount of CO2 released into the atmosphere and to mitigate its effects on climate change. Over the years, naturally occurring CO2 sources have been utilized in enhanced oil recovery (EOR) projects in the United States. This has presented an opportunity to supplement and gradually replace the high demand for natural CO2 sources with anthropogenic sources. There also exist incentives for operators to become involved in the storage of anthropogenic CO2 within partially depleted reservoirs, in addition to the incremental production oil revenues. These incentives include a wider availability of anthropogenic sources, the reduction of emissions to meet regulatory requirements, tax incentives in some jurisdictions, and favorable public relations. The United States Department of Energy has sponsored several Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnerships (RCSPs) through its Carbon Storage program which have conducted field demonstrations for both EOR and saline aquifer storage. Various research efforts have been made in the area of reservoir characterization, monitoring, verification and accounting, simulation, and risk assessment to ascertain long-term storage potential within the subject storage complex. This book is a collection of lessons learned through the RCSP program within the Southwest Region of the United States. The scope of the book includes site characterization, storage modeling, monitoring verification reporting (MRV), risk assessment and international case studies.
