Abstract

The aims of the Women in Architecture Berlin 2021 festival were to make female architects visible, provide them with a platform and a voice, and to showcase their achievements. Institutions, associations, and initiatives in the field of building culture were all encouraged to take part. Seventy years after the death of Emilie Winkelmann, the first successful female German architect, the organizers wanted to consider the current status of women in architecture: Who are the strongest female players in the building sector today? Are they being acknowledged? What is the state of equality in building culture and how does the profession need to be modified? This publication highlights what political, teaching, and commercial institutions, managers and employees, university leaders and professors can do—and in some cases have already done—to promote equality on the building site.

Abstract

Abstract

Percy m’a quittée hier.

Abstract

This issue of ’scape is about women’s perspectives – about how they approach their work as landscape architects, architects and urban planners. What motivates them, what concerns them and what attitudes drive them? In the dossier, we portray how Tarna Klitzner, Marti Fooks, Olga Felip, Sara Candiracci and Martha Fajardo design together with the natural world, and how they take the diversity in humans and their accommodation as their central point of focus. Visions don’t emerge in a vacuum, therefore we highlight some of the female shoulders on which they stand, and we shed a light on some exciting research that is currently being done on a critical topic that now begins to receive more attention and awareness: the link between gender and perceiving and behaving in the public space. Next to the women's dossier, this issue contains : a portrait of Terremoto, a young and quirky design firm from the US. Not sticking to any styles, methods or office hierarchies, yet functioning as a team in which each head acts according to both shared beliefs and their own diversity of ideas, Terremoto (Spanish for ‘earthquake’) stands for site-specific landscapes and ‘guerrilla-style’ gardening. Landscape architects Cannon Ivers (LDA Design), and Catherine Dee and creative director Jeroen de Willigen (De Zwarte Hond) share their Insta-inspiration. Also part of this issue of ’scape: reviews about how buildings and places with an industrial past are being transformed in a circular way into fine, surprising places to work, live and enjoy. We discuss five projects in which the designers and those involved have made something special out of a former industrial site. While retaining the right historical elements, they have created the right atmosphere, thus giving the place back to society while also striving while also striving to make the construction process as climate neutral as possible. In Pittsburgh, with Mill 19 a circular and unique meeting point for the neighbourhood has emerged; in Barcelona the project Vallcarca Next initiated a new life for an old cement factory; in Lyon an industrial hall became a parking garden; in Athens a former airport becomes a huge green park with a carbon-neutral design; and in Detroit degeneration is reversed by the creation of the public Core CityPark.

Abstract

Abstract

Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky (1897–2000) entered the modernist canon with her “Frankfurt Kitchen.” She is also considered a pioneer of social architecture, a women’s rights activist, and, last but not least, a heroine of the resistance to the Nazi dictatorship. In this book, available in English for the first time, recent research in the fields of art history, contemporary history, pedagogy, and gender studies provides a nuanced picture of Schütte-Lihotzky, whose estate is archived at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. The volume explores her rich architectural oeuvre, her transnational experiences and professional networks, her political development as a Communist, and her current reception. It breaks through the mythology to present a rounded picture of Schütte-Lihotzky, an icon of architectural history.

Abstract

On the occasion of the series of events “The architect’s table” held at the Museo Novecento in Florence, the museum also hosted a gallery of architectural projects designed exclusively by famous international women architects: Carmen Andriani, Sandy Attia, Cristina Celestino, Izaskun Chinchilla, Maria Claudia Clemente, Isotta Cortesi, Liz Diller, Lina Ghothmeh, Carla Juaçaba, Fuesanta Nieto, Simona Ottieri, Carme Pigem, Guendalina Salimei, Marella Santangelo, Maria Alessandra Segantini, Benedetta Tagliabue, Monica Tricario, Patricia Viel, Paola Viganò and Laura Andreini, curator of the exhibition and catalogue, who proposed a reflection on the professional role of women in the world of architecture. As Laura Andreini herself states: “The topic of gender inequality brings with it numerous controversies and possible objections: by classifying the female world in a category of its own, do we not run the risk of depleting its value? In light of gender equality, if it seems superfluous to dedicate an exhibition to men, then why dedicate one to women? The answer that the exhibition strives to provide to these possible objections is the conviction that an exhibition dedicated to the work of male architects would add nothing new to a narrative that has been going on for centuries.” On this subject, each section dedicated to an individual designer is introduced by an observation by the designer in question on the situation of women in the field of architecture and the difficulties encountered in their personal careers, resulting in a very heterogeneous perspective rich in aspects worthy of reflection.
