"This book explores strength sports as a site of political contestation and a platform for insurgent gender practices. It contributes to our understanding of key themes in the study of sport, such as feminism, power, the body and identity. Drawing together interdisciplinary work spanning political science, sociology, gender studies, and biological and cultural anthropology, the book argues that in the face of ongoing embodied precarity, strength sports have become a complex form of both resistance to, and reproduction of, patriarchy. This argument also challenges traditional understandings and definitions of "strength." Covering recreational-level participation and elite athletics, across experiential/individual, local, national, transnational, and global scales, the book explores diverse topics such as the pregnant strength athlete, the status of trans women in strength sports, and the gendered dimensions of online fitness communities during the COVID-19 pandemic. In so doing, it traces power dynamics and the interplay among multiple oppressions. Showcasing important empirical and activist research, this book is fascinating reading for anybody with an interest in women's sport, women's studies, gender studies, the sociology of sport, strength and conditioning, feminist politics, or cultural studies"--

In 'Japanese Women and Sport', Robin Kietlinski sets out to problematize the hegemonic image of the delicate Japanese woman, highlighting an overlooked area in the history of modern Japan. Previous studies of gender in the Japanese context do not explore the history of female participation in sport, and recent academic studies of women and sport tend to focus on Western countries. Kietlinski locates the discussion of Japanese women in sport within a larger East Asian context and considers the socio-economic position and history of modern Japan. Reaching from the early 20th century to the prese

Feminist Figure Girl chronicles the transformation of art history professor Lianne McTavish, from a university professor into an extraordinarily tanned and crystal-encrusted bikini-wearing "figure girl."Figure competitions seek a softer appearance than traditional forms of bodybuilding but still require rigorous weightlifting, an extreme protein diet, and many hours of posing in high heels. While training for a figure show, McTavish combined autoethnographic methods, participant observation, and feminist theory to find new ways of thinking about physique culture and the female body. The author, who specializes in critical visual culture and the history of the body, explores such contemporary issues as body image, fat studies, identity politics, and "postfeminism," while rethinking fitness culture, diet regimes, feminist politics, reproductive activism, performance art, and the social function of photography. Written in a lively personal style reminiscent of McTavish's popular blog, she clearly explains the complex ideas stemming from the theoretical work of such writers as Judith Butler, Simone de Beauvoir, Michel Foucault, Iris Marion Young, Edmund Husserl, and Maurice Merleau-Ponty. The book also includes many photos documenting McTavish's physical transformation.

How are gender and sexuality constructed and contested in sport? This important new book brings together gender studies and sexuality studies to provide original and critical insights on identity formation within a wide range of sport-related relations and practices. Contested meanings of "gender" and "sexuality," the gender-power relations constructed in and through sport, and the connections between gender, sexuality and sport-related theories, policies and practices are made clear in this comprehensive and engaging text. The authors draw on key contemporary theoretical debates concerning gender, sport and identity that have been developed in a range of disciplines and subject fields including sociology, social and cultural geography, media studies and management studies. The book is structured into three sections, addressing issues of masculinity, "feminization" and sexuality: Part One, "Representing masculinities in sport" explores media representations in men's football, tennis, rugby and skate boarding. Part Two, "The "feminization" of male sports arenas" examines ways in which women have contested male-dominated sporting arenas of basketball, triathlon and cricket. Part Three, "The performance of sexuality in sporting spaces" analyses the development of queer theory in sport studies, the significance of homophobia in sport, the role of the Gay Games, and management practices in developing sport. This book provides the most comprehensive critique of gender and sexuality in sport to be published to date and will be of particular interest to students and academics working in sport studies, leisure studies, gender studies, queer and sexuality studies, social and cultural geography.
