Excerpt : There was something of the prophet about Öyvind Fahlström. His paintings, articles, plays, films and manifestos were like stones splashing down on to the surface of time, and one could sit years afterwards watching the ripples still spreading. But he differed from the prophets of old in that there was little of the mystic or ecstatic about him. He often spoke or wrote of "ecstatic communities," "satori experiences" and drug trips. But when he himself was trying to describe the world in which he, for better or for worse, had been placed, he set to work with a more sober passion. He collected facts with a mind open equally to broad essentials and to the trivial, the odd and the bizarre. The diverse output of the Brazilian-born, Swedish artist Öyvind Fahlström spanned performance, painting, collage, poetry, assemblage, and design. Filled with images of his visual art and excerpts from his extensive body of written work, this catalogue also includes appreciative contributions by Erró, Olle Granath, Pontus Hultén, Billy Klüver, Ilmar Laaban, Matta, Claes Oldenburg, Robert Rauschenberg, and Carl Fredrik Reuterswärd. This catalogue is part two of a three-volume, boxed set along with Asger Jorn and Sleeping Beauty—Art Now, all of which were represented in the series Northern Visions, an exhibition series that examined Northern European artwork chronologically from the mid-20th century until 1982, when these catalogues were published.
