Abstract

External fixation in Orthopedic traumatology is a textbook that focuses on the use of external fixation in the acute management of patients with serious orthopaedic injuries. The book highlights the indications for external fixation and provides an evidenced based guide to both the specialist orthopedic surgeon and the trainee. The manuscript is organised in 14 chapters covering the indications and surgical techniques for pelvis, lower limb and upper limb injuries, including detailed illustrations and clinical photographs that will enable the reader to rapidly visualise the structure of the construct and to plan the surgery accordingly. More general topics such as damage control orthopedics, the biomechanics of external fixation and medico-legal considerations surrounding the injured patients are also included to provide an overall picture of the Orthopedic trauma patient. The Combined experience of the editors and authors, their involvement in a number of external fixation system designs and their international reputation in the field contribute to making this textbook an essential tool that should be available to all orthopaedic surgeons dealing with injured patients.

Abstract

External fixation has proven a valuable tool in the effort to correct deformities, improve healing of fractures, and improve outcomes of orthopedic surgery. This expertly constructed reference, External Fixators of the Foot and Ankle, explores the ways in which external fixators are used to reduce tissue damage, reduce strain on nerves and vasculature, and improve healing in the surgical treatment of foot and ankle deformities and injuries. Authoritative perspectives from leading orthopedic and podiatric surgeons help to build an understanding and strengthen your technique. The multidisciplinary team approach in treating complex trauma, reconstructive, or diabetic patients is emphasized throughout this textbook. Detailed coverage of the tools of external fixation describes the roles, applications, and limitations of the various rings, rods, wires, pins, and designs used in external fixation. How-to, step-by-step instruction addresses a range of fixation procedures, helping readers understand the relevant anatomy and avoid potential complications. Abundant illustrations highlight the text, providing a surgeon's eye view of a range of commonly performed procedures.

Abstract

When it was developed, the Ilizarov device represented a revolutionary advance that made it possible to correct previously untreatable conditions through the stimulation of bone growth based on the principle of distraction osteogenesis. The device subsequently gained popularity among surgeons throughout the world since it can be used for the treatment of fractures that have failed to heal satisfactorily and for deformity correction. The technique is, however, complex and requires specialist knowledge if it is to be applied optimally. This is the second edition of a well-received book that focuses primarily on external fixation using the Ilizarov device but also considers other devices employed for the purpose. The opening chapters include discussion of biomechanical principles, use of a system of coordinates to allow safer insertion of K-wires and half pins, preoperative preparation, and principles of frame construction. External fixation of a variety of fractures in different pathologic settings is then clearly explained in a series of detailed chapters with the aid of high-quality illustrations. Numerous case reports are included to illustrate the results of different treatment methods. In addition, principles of postoperative management are described and advice is provided on correction of errors and treatment of complications. Since the first edition the text has been thoroughly updated, with inclusion of contributions from leading world experts. This volume will serve as an indispensable manual both for trainee orthopedic surgeons embarking on a steep learning curve and for more experienced surgeons requiring advice and guidance in demanding cases.

Abstract

This book is the first comprehensive text on the Ilizarov method to come from Russia since Professor Ilizarov passed away in 1992. This text covers both acute traumatic reconstruction with the Ilizarov method as well as orthopaedic reconstruction with the Ilizarov techniques. The author’s unique method of cross-sectional anatomy evaluation improves the safety of pin and wire insertion. This book will serve as a new foundation for the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons interested in limb reconstruction with circular external fixation. Dror Paley, MD, FRCSC In this manual you can find not only an analysis of the basis of external fixation, but also the author’s original approach in this field. Certainly, no book can include all possible clinical situations in orthopaedic practice. Nevertheless, this manual is different from others in being easy to read. Consequently the execution of each method of external fixation can be readily grasped. Furthermore, the perfectly prepared illustrations will be of significant benefit to the orthopaedic surgeon. Prof. Vladimir I. Shevtsov I am pleased to present this book to experts on external fixation and to those who are taking only their first steps in this field. I regret that "the method for the unified designation of external fixation" is only now becoming the standard language of orthopaedic surgeons. If it had been developed and introduced earlier, it would have been possible to avoid many of the criticisms (sometimes justified) of the training in the method resulting from "individual" perceptions of the information in articles, instructional lectures, and manuals. The clever design, the high-quality illustrations, the wide range of pathological conditions considered for application of external fixation, and the style of presentation of the material are great advantages of this manual. I am sure that it will prove to be of great interest to orthopaedic surgeons in many different countries. Prof. Viktor K. Kalnberz.
