Abstract

Doelstelling: This dissertation aims to describe how cultural references (CR) are translated in the exhibition catalogue British Vision: observation and imagination in British art 1750-1950, published on the occasion of the exhibition British Vision, which ran from 6 October 2007 to 13 January 2008 in the Museum of Fine Arts in Ghent. Middelen of methode: -Discussion of the translation situation.-Quantitative analysis of the cultural references from a chapter in the exhibition catalogue according to a classification of types of CR and translation techniques. -Qualitative analysis of a selection of cultural references. Resultaten: The translators' general translation strategy is marked by a tendency of faithfulness towards the ST, i.e. the translators attempt to bring the TT audience closer to the ST. This exoticizing strategy fits into the concept of the exhibition, which is set up as a project for Belgians to “discover or rediscover British Art” (British Vision: 2007) and thus bring them closer to the SC. As the translators chose specificity and “local colour” before the ease of reading, the translation is suitable for the well-read audience for which van Calster set out to write. The translation strategy is obtained by appropriate translation techniques: Transcription is applied for the translation of more than half of the analysed CRs in British Vision. This is the most preserving technique as the CR is simply copied into the TT. The second most frequent technique of the analysed CR is literal translation, which is the second most preserving as it produces no changes except for those which the TL grammar requires.

Abstract

The classic book on the art and history of weaving-now expanded and in full colorWritten by one of the twentieth century's leading textile artists, this splendidly illustrated book is a luminous meditation on the art of weaving, its history, its tools and techniques, and its implications for modern design. First published in 1965, On Weaving bridges the transition between handcraft and the machine-made, highlighting the essential importance of material awareness and the creative leaps that can occur when design problems are tackled by hand. With her focus on materials and handlooms, Anni Albers discusses how technology and mass production place limits on creativity and problem solving, and makes the case for a renewed embrace of human ingenuity that is particularly important today. Her lucid and engaging prose is illustrated with a wealth of rare and extraordinary images showing the history of the medium, from hand-drawn diagrams and close-ups of pre-Columbian textiles to material studies with corn, paper, and the typewriter, as well as illuminating examples of her own work. Now available for a new generation of readers, this expanded edition of On Weaving updates the book's original black-and-white illustrations with full-color photos, and features an afterword by Nicholas Fox Weber and essays by Manuel Cirauqui and T'ai Smith that shed critical light on Albers and her career.
