The Tablīghī Jamā'at is a twentieth century faith renewal movement, which is presently operating in more than eighty countries. With millions of participants, its annual conference has become the second largest Muslim congregation after the Hajj. In the absence of official writings and its abstinence from media publicity, the Jamā'at can best be studied by participant observation, as illustrated by the studies of its activities in India, Britain, France, Germany, Belgium, Canada, Morocco and South Africa, which are presented in this volume. Studying the historical and social growth of this movement in India, its transnational transformation, the development of its ideology, particularly on the questions of conversion, gender, religious diversity, organization, communication, adjustment with the local environment and personal transformation, this volume offers fascinating information about contemporary da'wa phenomenon in Islam.

"Editors Weismann and Malik have done a fabulous service by compiling this collection of timely essays about the place of da'wa, or "proselytization," in modern, globalized Islam. The authors and editors define and problematize the term carefully and lay out the need for a work such as this. At a time when much Western media is myopically focused on extremism and the more violent manifestations of global jihad, the Islamic world is fundamentally and simply more concerned with proselytization. The contributors represent a variety of approaches and come from a wide range of academic, religious, and national background, which will lend significantly to the credibility of this work"--

How does a group that operates terror cells and espouses violence become a ruling political party? Can a single organization be committed to political activism and charitable good works while simultaneously dispatching suicide bombers to attack civilian targets? How is the world to understand and respond to Hamas, the militant Islamist organization that Palestinian voters brought to power in the stunning election of January 2006? This important book provides the most complete and fully documented assessment of Hamas ever written. Matthew Levitt, a counterterrorism expert with extensive field experience in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza, draws aside the veil of legitimacy that Hamas hides behind. He presents concrete, detailed evidence from an extensive array of international intelligence materials, including recently declassified CIA, FBI, and Department of Homeland Security reports. In the book, Levitt demolishes what he terms the myth of disparate wings in Hamas. The notion that the organization's military, political, and social 'wings' are distinct from one another is belied by ample evidence. In fact, the records show, Hamas meets in the mosques and hospitals it maintains to plan its terror attacks, buries caches of arms and explosives under its own schoolyard playgrounds, and transfers and launders funds for terrorist activity through local charity committees. This book catalogues the alarming extent to which the group's political and social welfare leaders support terrorism. Drawing a portrait of unprecedented accuracy, Matthew Levitt exposes the real Hamas: an organization that threatens peace and security far beyond the borders of the West Bank and Gaza. Levitt urges the international community to take heed, and he offers well-considered ideas for countering the threat Hamas poses.

An essential aspect of what is now called the Islamic Revival, the cassette sermon can be heard in most Middle Eastern cities, punctuating the daily routines of many men and women. Charles Hirschkind shows how these tapes provide the means by which Islamic ethical traditions recalibrate to a modern political and technological order& mdash;to its noise and forms of pleasure and boredom, but also to its political incitements and call for citizen participation. Focusing on Cairo's popular neighborhoods, Hirschkind highlights the pivotal role sermon tapes now play in an expanding arena of Islamic
