Catholiques et Evangéliques engagés en France dans des conversations depuis 1998, mandatés respectivement par la Conférence des évêques catholiques de France et, aujourd'hui, par le Conseil national des évangéliques de France (CNEF), nous avons publié un premier document qui présentait les évangéliques. Nous réfléchissons maintenant à l'évangélisation, sujet à la fois crucial et sensible. Pouvons-nous évangéliser ensemble ? Dans nos communautés, une réponse positive va de soi pour certains ; une réponse négative est une évidence pour d'autres. D'autres encore se posent des questions. Nous avons voulu explorer les sujets qui nous différencient ou qui nous séparent et qui peuvent empêcher des actions communes. Nous en présentons quatre ici : l'évangélisation, la conversion, le salut et le baptême. Au cours des rencontres, nous avons découvert des convergences là où nous pouvions nous attendre à des oppositions frontales. Nous avons essayé de discerner les contours précis de ce qui nous divise et d'en évaluer la portée. Nous avons appris à aller au-delà des mots pour chercher le fond de la pensée de l'autre, sans la caricaturer. Personne ne s'est renié. Tous, nous espérons avoir progressé dans la grâce et dans la connaissance de Jésus-Christ. A chacun de prendre maintenant ses responsabilités et de se mettre encore davantage à l'écoute et à l'école de l'Esprit Saint. Evangéliser aujourd'hui implique de connaître, de respecter et d'aimer les autres disciples du Christ, pour que le monde croie !
