Barrington Moore, Jr., one of the most distinguished thinkers in critical theory and historical sociology, was long concerned with the prospects for freedom and decency in industrial society. The product of decades of reflection on issues of authority, inequality, and injustice, this volume analyzes fluctuating moral beliefs and behavior in political and economic affairs at different points in history, from the early Middle Ages in England to the prospects for liberalism under twentieth-century Soviet socialism. The social sources of antisocial behavior; principles of social inequality; and the origins, enemies, and possibilities of rational discussion in public affairs-these are among the topics Moore considers as he seeks to uncover the historical causes of some accepted forms of morality and to assess their social consequences.The keynote essay examines how moral codes grew out of commercial practices in England from medieval times through the industrial revolution. Moore pays special attention to conceptions of honesty and the temptation to evade that inform the volume as a whole. In the other essays, he considers particular political issues, viewing "political" in its broadest sense as an unequal distribution of power and authority that carries a strong moral charge. Free of preaching and advocacy, his work offers a rare reasonable assessment of the morality of major social institutions over time.

De standaardmens is gezond en heeft een baan. Dit beleidsadagium is meer en meer de norm geworden. Voldoe je daar niet aan, dan heb je een probleem, of beter, dan ben je een probleem. Maar hoe zit het dan met de sociale positie van werklozen, van mensen die geen betaalde baan hebben, die over te weinig talenten beschikken of die door een chronische ziekte of handicap geen betaalde arbeid kunnen verrichten? Binnen een samenleving die zo is ingericht alsof al haar leden standaardmensen zijn ben je al gauw ongewoon of zelfs een tweederangsburger. Dit boek gaat over de vraag of we ons wel bewust zijn van welke normen we hanteren. Kunnen we eigenlijk niet beter van uitgaan dat iedereen ertoe doen en recht heeft op een menswaardig bestaan, en op respect. Binnen een humane samenleving moet iedereen onder eigen regie, en dus ook met het recht op verschil, een bestaan als volwaardig medeburger kunnen ontwikkelen. In 'De standaardmens voorbij' volgt de lezer de auteur bij zijn zoeken naar een sociale theorie over een humane samenleving. Met voortdurend de positie voor ogen van diegenen die op zorg en ondersteuning zijn aangewezen. Wat betekent die afhankelijkheid en hoe behoud je je zelfrespect? Wat is er nodig om de regie over je eigen bestaan vast te houden, om niet te worden gereduceerd tot zorgobject? En dan ook nog in jezelf te blijven geloven. Daar ligt de kern van empowerment en emancipatie, met als doel een gevarieerde samenleving, waarin iedereen ertoe doet.
