L'élongation des membres, la frontalisation des volumes, l'effacement du modelé, l'hiératisme des poses, le décharnement des figures, la recherche du type et du signe - autant de traits de l'art byzantin dont le grand historien André Grabar repère la source dans les courants néo-platoniciens du IIIe siècle après J.-C.
