The biblical books Ezra and Nehemiah are not highly regarded because of a painful point. In both books, a call can be found to put an end to marriages with foreign, or strange women. This commentary wants to understnad that summons in the context of the worldat that time and to show that other themes play a role in Ezra and Nehemiah. In the time after the return from the Babylonian exile Israel had to search for a new identity. It was found around the temple and from the Torah of Moses which was appropriated for a new era.

In his third volume of collected essays, the former Professor of Hebrew Bible at Edinburgh University assembles studies published since 2017. With one significant modification (on the first Jeroboam), they develop the twin theses of his 2017 monograph, Life in Kings: that the material common to the books of Samuel-Kings and Chronicles is both untypical of Samuel-Kings as a whole and the major source out of which they developed. Most importantly, these fresh essays explore the DNA of what Graeme Auld calls the Book of Two Houses (BoTH): some 150 uniquely paired words (including names) and phrases that occur in its reports of only two kings. The final extended essay (not previously published) sets these pairings in their context throughout the book. As the artistry of this foundational text is revealed, fresh historical questions call for answers.

Das 5. Buch Esra gehört wohl zu den am wenigsten bearbeiteten 'jüdisch/christlichen' Apokryphen des (wahrscheinlich) 2. Jahrhunderts unserer Zeitrechnung. Dabei wird der Text gemeinsam mit 4 Esra im Anhang der Vulgata überliefert und zeigt vielfältige Beziehungen zu kanonisch gewordenen Texten auf. Auf eben solche Bezugnahmen blickt diese Arbeit und untersucht intertextuelle Bezüge zwischen 5 Esra und dem Buch Baruch, Jeremia 7, dem Matthäus-Evangelium, der Offenbarung des Johannes und 4 Esra. Dabei stehen grössere und grundsätzliche Fragen im Hintergrund: Wie lässt sich die 'Kommunikation' verschiedener Texte miteinander erfassen? In welchem Verhältnis stehen 'prophetische' und 'apokalyptische' Texte zueinander? Wie ist das Verhältnis von 'Christentum' und 'Judentum' im zweiten Jahrhundert zu denken? Und wie spiegelt sich die Beziehung und vielleicht auch die Spannung zwischen Israel und der 'Kirche' in den Texten dieser Zeit wider? Spuren für mögliche Antworten sind in 5 Esra, dieser spannenden, kurzen und oft unterschätzten Schrift erkennbar.

This volume of the Biblia Americana contains Cotton Mather's annotations on the books of Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Canticles, Jeremiah, and Isaiah. A mixture of historical-textual criticism and pious explications, the commentaries are a treasure trove for scholars interested in the development of Reformed theology and biblical interpretation during a decisive period of intellectual change in the early modern Atlantic world. Mather, an apologetically oriented, pastoral yet deeply learned exegete, confronts the early Enlightenment challenges to the Bible's authority. He engages with issues of translation and the difficult questions about authorship, provenance, and genre being asked in his day, especially about the three books traditionally ascribed to King Solomon. Who wrote Proverbs and Ecclesiastes? How can the worldly wisdom of these books be reconciled with the Christian gospel? Is Canticles only a royal wedding song celebrating human love? In turn, the annotations on Isaiah and Jeremiah are crucially concerned with the relevance and evidential value of the Hebrew prophets for the claims of Christian theology. If seen in their original contexts, in what ways can the oracles of Isaiah and Jeremiah be understood to speak of Christ, the gospel and the second coming? The volume shows the struggle of exegetes in Mather's generation to adjust traditional interpretations of the Old Testament to a growing awareness of the Scriptures' historicity. The annotations shift between detailed attention to this historical dimension of the texts and typological and allegorical readings. Moreover, many of the entries reveal a new »Baconian« concern with demonstrating the factual realism of the scriptural narratives by recourse to empirical evidence and the natural sciences.
