Abstract

This is an open access book. The 2nd International Conference on Languages and Arts across Cultures (ICLAAC) aims to provide a venue for lecturers, teachers, researchers, as well as language and art professionals to share their insights, experiences, and ideas. This conference will also bridge the knowledge gap by presenting their works on languages and arts issues. The event will provide limitless resources and opportunities to interact with prominent scholars in this field worldwide. This will allow us to significantly expand our existing global network. The conference theme will give us a better understanding of humans through languages and arts. The development of cultural value occurring in today's global communities is certainly a stimulant for artist and language users in creating their artifacts. Restoring cross-cultural understanding is a bridge to understanding the complexities of language, culture, and the role of art in them. Cross-cultural understanding refers to people's attempts to understand one another, particularly between people of different cultural backgrounds. Significant cultural and artistic creations are incorporated into a language that promotes scholarly debate and scientific comprehension. As an attempt to minimize the spread of covid-19 virus, the conference presenters will be invited to present their papers online via zoom.

Abstract

This book draws on real-world case studies to highlight key challenges and support the crafting of relevant and contextual responses. There is increasing pressure on academics and teaching staff to provide high-quality teaching and delivery in English. More than an edited volume, it offers a true dialogue on emerging trends in EMI, making it of considerable value to practitioners, students and policymakers alike. By analyzing established and emerging models of EMI delivery, the book presents a review and assessment of how universities can respond to student expectations and build internal capacities so as to offer better learning experiences.

Abstract

This edited volume presents eleven empirical papers reporting the existing literature and the results of an original study focusing on EMI (English as a medium of instruction) in a particular area (Central and Eastern Europe, Western and Southern Europe, Nordic/Baltic countries, Central Asia, the Middle East, East Asia, South-East Asia, North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and Latin America). Each of these different areas tends to have its own ways of dealing with the EMI issue, and these are brought together in a meta-analysis in the final chapter. Implications for the conduct of English as a medium of instruction are drawn, both on a chapter-by-chapter basis and also in the meta-analysis. The examination of EMI on a contextual basis is a unique feature of this book, setting it apart from others in the field, which almost all deal with a single or limited context. The volume will be of interest to policymakers, institutional heads, graduate students and their teachers, and to thesis writers and researchers.

Abstract

Today, English is the global lingua franca and competent English communication skills should be one of the rights of all educated individuals irrespective of any socio-cultural limits. By introducing a new method, this book focuses on helping any learner to get sufficient communication skills in English as much as in the native language. This method helps one to avoid translating from mother tongue to English. And by using the method of thinking in English, one could acquire the required English bilingual skills naturally. The method is founded on the philosophical idea of mentalese-mind language as the base language of thinking available for humans for constructing thoughts. The proposed English Bilingual Project (EBP) helps one to transfer thoughts from a structureless mentalese to the grammatical structure of any language English/Japanese/Chinese. The method described in this book works in two ways: one it helps one to intuitively understand the working of mentalese; the other is by practicing think in English with the mentalese, one could generate the bilingual brain. The main procedure for transferring thoughts from the mentalese to English is through writing one's thoughts. This helps one to think effectively in English like one's own mother tongue. This method works as a prime requirement model for one to generate multilingual skills. The book resourced the idea of mentalese from the classical philosophy, reflects it with the modern generative theories, links it with the studies in neuro-linguistic studies on bilingualism and the bilingual brain.

Abstract

This book discusses how to approach critical literacy in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) contexts. It responds to the concerns of educators who get enthusiastic about teaching critical literacy, but become perplexed when they start reading about its theories. This causes some to avoid it altogether and leads others to argue for practicing it without theory. The book argues that both positions should be reconsidered and capitalizes on the notion of praxis, a notion introduced by Freire to explicate the various subtle connections between theory and practice. The book instills the theoretical assumptions of critical literacy with as little jargon as possible, with many practical illustrations. It will be of interest to graduate and undergraduate students, language teachers, program and material developers, researchers, and educational policy makers.
