Abstract

Phyllida Barlow (*1944) tests boundaries with her monumental sculptures in an eccentric yet humorous manner, reflecting on the relationship with our environment through her use of industrial and everyday materials. With impressive installation photos and never-before-seen archival material the publication presents Barlow's unique oeuvre from her early works until the present day. The British artist's career is as unusual as her works, which radically put the contemporary concept of sculpture to the test. Today Barlow is regarded as one of the most prominent artists in Britain, but she achieved her breakthrough only recently. She dismantled many of her works after the end of the exhibition and recycled them again to create new sculptures. The major retrospective shows drawings and pioneering works from all her creative phases, including new works formed from key sculptures which had already been destroyed.

Abstract

This interdisciplinary study interprets the façade of Wells Cathedral as an integral part of thirteenth-century English Church liturgy and politics. Carolyn Malone posits that architectural motifs, as signs, complemented not only the façade's sculptural program of the Church Triumphant but also its use during liturgical processions. Interpreted as an ideological construct, the façade's design is related to theological change, liturgical innovation and political strategy, as well as to the conjuncture of several major historical and cultural events of the 1220s. As part of the Church's empowering ritual, the façade expressed the reforming views of the Fourth Lateran Council, promoted Wells as the seat the diocese and proclaimed the covenant between Church and State in England following Magna Carta.

Abstract

"The most thorough survey of the provocative British artist, sculptor, and photographer, Sarah Lucas, one of the most important living British artists. Sarah Lucas, having emerged in the UK in the late 1980s alongside artists including Tracey Emin and Damien Hirst, gained notoriety for her bawdy and irreverent sculptures. Often using found objects, Lucas provokes viewers with works that challenge our notions of gender, sexuality, and identity. Featuring eight essays and an interview with the artist, this volume reveals the breadth and complexity of Lucas's work in sculpture, photography, and installation over the past three decades." --
