"Technological Learning in the Transition to a Low-Carbon Energy System quantifies key trends and drivers of energy technologies deployed in the energy transition. It uses the experience curve tool to show how future cost reductions and cumulative deployment of these technologies may shape the future mix of the electricity, heat and transport sectors. The book explores experience curves in detail, including possible pitfalls and demonstrates how to quantify the 'quality' of experience curves. It discusses how this tool is currently implemented in models and addresses methodological challenges and solutions. It also explores new applications of the concept, such as the ex-ante assessment of environmental impacts of energy technologies. The book adopts experience curves for major energy technologies relevant to the energy transition. For each technology, current market trends, past cost reductions & underlying drivers, available experience curves, and future prospects are considered. Electricity, heat and transport sector models are explored in depth to show how the future deployment of these technologies, and their associated costs, determine whether ambitious decarbonisation climate targets can be reached - and at what costs. The book also addresses lessons and recommendations for policy makers, industry and academics, including key technologies requiring further policy support, and what scientific knowledge gaps remain for future research"--

Undoubtedly, the industrialized countries are already facing a major and even existential problem: that of the transition from societies based on the massive use of fossil fuels to societies that have learned to do without them. This will, of necessity, be the real driver of the energy transition that we are talking about so much now! Because it is the future availability of fossil fuels that will give the tempo of this transition, and not the development of other sources of energy, so difficult is the way that remains to be done to these to replace them! This book aims to provide non-specialists, and those who are concerned by energy transition and climate protection, basic knowledge to better understand the nature of fossil fuels and their importance in the economies of the industrialized countries. The book also explains why their future availability will play a vital role in the future economic and social transformations in these countries. It consists of two parts that can be read in a largely independent way: – The first part aims to present the variety of fossil fuels and the physicochemical principles ruling their formation and that of their deposits in the earth’s crust. – The second part is a discussion on major current issues: What are the remaining fossil fuel reserves? When precisely during this century can we predict the decline of their productions? What consequences will this decline have for industrial societies? What is and what will be their role in climate change? What risks does their use entail for public health?

These 64 peer-reviewed papers cover the latest data found by researchers working in the fields of solar cells, eco-materials and technologies related to climate change and bio-medical materials. As such, they will be essential reading for those involved in those fields. Review from Book News Inc.: The International Union of Materials Research Societies (IUMRS) is comprised of all the materials research societies in Asia. Its 2010 conference encompassed 21 symposia covering six broad areas. The 64 papers in this first volume were selected from the symposia on solar cells and bio-medical materia

This volume contains data on the supply and consumption of coal, oil, gas, electricity, heat, renewable and waste. To enable analysis across various types of energy, all data are presented as comprehensive energy balances, expressed in tonnes of oil equivalent for over 100 non-OECD countries. Historical tables summarise production, trade and final consumption data as well as key energy and economic indicators. This book includes definitions of products and flows, explanatory notes on the individual country data and conversion factors from original units to tonnes of oil equivalent. More deta
