This derivative volume stemming from content included in our seminal Power Electronics Handbook takes its chapters related to renewables and establishes them at the core of a new volume dedicated to the increasingly pivotal and as yet under-published intersection of Power Electronics and Alternative Energy. While this re-versioning provides a corollary revenue stream to better leverage our core handbook asset, it does more than simply re-package existing content. Each chapter will be significantly updated and expanded by more than 50%, and all new introductory and summary chapters will be added to contextualize and tie the volume together. Therefore, unlike traditional derivative volumes, we will be able to offer new and updated material to the market and include this largely original content in our ScienceDirect Energy collection. Due to the inherently multi-disciplinary nature of renewables, many engineers come from backgrounds in Physics, Materials, or Chemical Engineering, and therefore do not have experience working in-depth with electronics. Abstract

Mil Colinas is a NGO founded in 2011 in order to contribute to the battle against inequality. Mil Colinas mediates between northern and southern countries in order to further social development. It is an educative project which started with 30 children and has grown to almost 200 people in addition to three Rwandese educators. Due to the fact that the current room is too small to carry out the activities, there is a clear necessity for the association to have its own space.&#13;Last summer (2015), I went to Rukara, the Rwandese village in which Mil Colinas operates. I began taking its measurement and shortly after the land was purchased. The current project plan is to utilize solar energy for the school's main source of power.&#13;During the period in which I was there, several facilities were visited (mainly schools and the health centre of Rukara) and some of them are already working with photovoltaic energy. Meetings took place around the country with key energy businesses in East Africa, such as Mobisol. Also the educators and children who are involved in Mil Colinas were directly contacted in order to understand and record the needs and desires they have for the new school.&#13;With all the necessary data from this African country, an off-micro grid has to be designed for the current project. This grid provides the required energy (mainly for lights and laptops) through a photovoltaic system and accumulators.&#13;Initially, it was necessary to measure the consumption as well as the solar irradiation in the area. Several hypothesis were created; taking into account different weather and other assumptions.&#13;Following the hypothesis, some simulations were run in Python in order to plot the charge level of the batteries per hour throughout the whole year. Having these results, some decisions could be taken in account in relation to the quantity of the photovoltaic panels and the batteries with the help of the tool Solver in Excel. The wiring was also calculated as well as the optimum angle for the electrical generators. The system is optimized regarding the economical plan. Several plans were made with AutoCAD are attached as well as the 3D views of the school made with SweetHome3D.&#13;As result of this project, there is an installation which will work in 48 V before the inverter and in 230 V upstream; 10 photovoltaic panels of 295 W each and 12 batteries of 200 Ah of capacity. Each unit is part of the installation along with the inverter and the controller. Initial investment reaches $12,257.67 but it is necessary to have a budget of $19,800.89 in total to assure the proper function during at least 24 years.

Les énergies marines renouvelables font partie de ces rares sujets d'étude dont l'appréhension juridique mobilise tout à la fois le droit international, le droit de l'Union européenne et le droit interne. Relativement exotiques pour le commun des juristes il y a encore peu, ces énergies produites à partir de la houle, des marées, du gradient thermique des mers, de salinité, ou encore des vents et des courants marins, aujourd'hui fédérées sous le sigle EMR, constituent depuis 2009 un champ de recherche spécifique, dont l'originalité n'a d'égal que sa complexité au regard de leur caractère bicéphale.Marines à raison de leur lieu de captation, les EMR intéressent de prime abord le droit de la mer qui, dans la volonté de ses pères fondateurs de favoriser les usages pacifiques du royaume de Neptune, va légitimer la production d'énergie à partir de l'eau, des courants et des vents, et ce depuis l'entrée en vigueur de la Convention de Montego Bay il y a plus de vingt ans.Renouvelables de par leur capacité de régénération, les EMR se voient doublement saisies par le droit de l'environnement compte tenu, d'une part, de leur contribution à la réalisation des objectifs en matière de réduction des émissions de gaz à effet de serre et, d'autre part, des impacts environnementaux de leur exploitation.Aussi ce qui se présente ici aux lecteurs n'est-il point le traité d'un quelconque « droit des énergies marines renouvelables » en quête d'autonomie, mais une monographie libre de toute prétention à l'exhaustivité, tirée d'une thèse de doctorat éponyme soutenue en mai 2013 et actualisée au 1er janvier 2015.De l'approche suivie dans cette thèse naît un questionnement sur le rôle du droit dans le développement des énergies renouvelables en mer. En premier lieu, le droit a-t-il plutôt un rôle moteur dans la promotion des investissements dans ce secteur au vu de la contribution des EMR au respect des engagements climatiques, à la sécurité de l'approvisionnement énergétique ou encore à la croissance ? Pour tenter d'y répondre, il conviendra de s'attarder sur l'attractivité économique du droit applicable avant d'envisager la question de la sécurité juridique des investissements engagés. En second lieu, le droit assume-t-il davantage un rôle régulateur dans la gestion des activités énergétiques marines eu égard aux impératifs de protection de l'environnement et de prévention des conflits d'usage ? Cette interrogation conduira à s'intéresser aux modalités de prise en compte de l'environnement dans les activités liées aux EMR ainsi que de leur intégration parmi les autres usages légitimes de la mer.En cherchant des réponses à ces questions, le présent ouvrage se veut un matériau de réflexion offrant un panorama juridique des questions soulevées par le développement des EMR dans des perspectives internationales, européennes et nationales, le tout dans un contexte de transition énergétique

Abstract

[5e éd.] Plus de 80 % de l'énergie utilisée aujourd'hui dans le monde provient de gisements de combustibles fossiles (charbon, gaz, pétrole) ou d'uranium. Ces gisements sont épuisables alors que l'énergie fournie par le soleil, les chutes d'eau, la croissance des végétaux, les marées, la chaleur de la terre est renouvelable. Si l'utilisation de ces énergies (auxquelles on associe souvent celle tirée des déchets) n'est évidemment pas nouvelle, elle représente aujourd'hui près de 14 % de la production mondiale d'énergie et pourrait, selon certains scénarios, atteindre 50 % au milieu du XXIVe siècle. Cet ouvrage propose un tableau précis des diverses sources d'énergies renouvelables actuelles, explique les modalités de leur production, présente les lieux où elles sont utilisées et la quantité d'énergie qu'elles fournissent à ce jour.

Abstract

Présentation des divers enjeux juridiques des politiques européennes de l'énergie. La 4e de couverture indique : "Depuis toujours, les États sont compétents pour définir leur propre stratégie en termes d'énergie, créant de véritables frontières énergétiques au sein de l'Europe. L'espace européen est ainsi largement morcelé par des approches nationales, voire nationalistes. Dans ce cadre, une politique énergétique de l'Union peut-elle bel et bien exister ? Cette dernière serait alors comprise comme une reconquête des confins de l'Union, voire même comme une réappropriation de l'idée d'intégration. La priorité de ce livre est donnée aux enjeux juridiques des énergies nouvelles et renouvelables, parce qu'elles permettent à l'Union de résoudre sa dépendance aux énergies fossiles, qui mine son influence sur la scène internationale. Les ENR agissent comme de puissants ferments de la dénationalisation des politiques énergétiques et rendent nécessaire la cohésion entre les États membres. Si l'on veut parvenir un jour à l'Union de l'énergie, la solidarité doit devenir la nouvelle frontière de la politique européenne de l'énergie. L'ouvrage est ainsi conçu en trois parties : les interconnexions juridiques dans l'espace européen de l'énergie ; la réinitialisation de l'espace par la solidarité entre les États membres ; l'internationalisation de l'espace européen de l'énergie. Il a pour objectif de faire comprendre les enjeux juridiques de l'Union de l'énergie aux étudiants de Master et de renseigner les professionnels ou citoyens qui s'interrogent sur les évolutions juridiques des politiques européennes et nationales de l'énergie."
