This Special Issue is dedicated to fungi that are found as endophytes in the world's plants. Among many other things, it covers newly-discovered fungi that are endophytic. The role of the endophyte in the plant microbiome is of emerging interest, and aspects of are included. Secondary products of endophytes are receiving renewed attention as some have been found that are potential fuels, antibiotics, antioxidants, and anticancer agents, as well as immunosuppressive compounds. Aspects concerning the physiological/biochemical/role of the endophyte, as it relates to its host are also of interest. It goes without saying that this volume also includes aspects of the genetics and epigenetics of endophytes, especially as they relate to the host genome or the production of valuable and important products.

"Endophytes are organisms that live between living plant cells and do not cause disease. Endophytes are ubiquitously present in diverse plant species, demonstrating a co-evolution with the plant host. Furthermore, different classes of microbial species, including bacteria, fungi, and actinomycetes colonize the internal plant tissues, leading to a wide range of implications. The medicinal plants associated with endophytes have been extensively studied as a potential source of bioactive compounds, with pharmacological attributes and biotechnological applications. Scientific breakthroughs in whole genome sequencing and annotation of endophyte-associated gene/metabolic pathways provided key insights into functional mechanisms and their dynamics within plants. Studies have highlighted the socio-economic implications of fungal endophytes in the environment, agriculture, and medicine with considerable success. Although extensively studied as a "production platform" of novel pharmacological metabolites, the molecular mechanisms of plant-endophyte dynamics remain less understood/explored for their efficient utilization in drug discovery and other biotechnological applications. This book aims to provide comprehensive knowledge about the multifaceted applications of endophytes"--

The book brings together papers covering the most recent scientific research from the top endophyte researchers in the world. It presents the state of the art in our knowledge and technical capacity and explores future directions of this work. It is highly relevant and timely because of the need to improve global food security and its sustainability, and also to provide novel bioactive molecules for medicine. There is also a need to protect forestry in a changing and growing world. Endophytes offer a huge potential to reduce environmentally damaging agricultural inputs such as fertilisers and pesticides. They are also a largely overlooked group of organisms where much basic science remains to be undertaken. For example, new molecular tools of DNA profiling using high throughput environmental sequencing are allowing the exploration of a previously largely unknown resource. There is a pressing need to convert scientific research on endophytes into practical application. This book describes how that will be achieved.
