In recent decades the experiences and political struggles of immigrants, exiles, and sojourners have inspired some of the most provocative feature films and documentaries in world cinema. These have sparked theoretical debates about cultural identity, place, and representation in the media. The thirteen essays in this anthology contribute to a growing interest in the emerging international genre of exile and diaspora films, treating a variety of motion pictures from Europe and the United States in their national and transnational contexts. These essays examine how contemporary cinema--both fiction feature film and documentary--has imagined the experience of migration and displacement, the struggle for citizenship and cultural belonging, and the encounter and negotiation of different cultures and identities. The authors discuss the ways cinema explores the many contradictions of exile and diaspora--the complicated meanings of home, the exile's nostalgia for origins, the hopes and tragedies of border crossings, the difficulties of belonging to a strange society and being a stranger, and the conundrums of gender for the migrant, especially women's conciliation of different social roles and cultural expectations.--Publisher.

John Sundholm and Lars Gustaf Andersson consider the creativity that lies in the state of exile, offering analyses of over 50 rarely seen immigrant films that would otherwise remain invisible and unarchived. They shed light on the complex web of personal, economic and cultural circumstances around migrant filmmaking, and discuss associations that became important sites of self-organization for exiled filmmakers: The Independent Film Group, The Stockholm Film Workshop, Cineco, Kaleidoscope and Tensta Film Association.

Transnationalität und Transkulturalität sind im (westlichen) Kino insbesondere dort sichtbar, wo auf den Leinwänden spezifische Erfahrungsdimensionen von Migration sowie allgemein die gesellschaftliche und kulturelle Situation von Menschen mit Migrationshintergrund im Zentrum der Auseinandersetzung stehen: beispielsweise in den Filmen deutsch-türkischer Regisseure, dem französischen cinéma beur, dem indisch-pakistanischen Kino Großbritanniens oder dem Chicano cinema in den USA.

Racines et déracinements au grand écran examine les représentations de la migration dans le cinéma français contemporain. L’héritage du passé colonial français, la décolonisation et les vagues d’immigration vers l’Hexagone continuent de jouer un rôle majeur dans la société française d’aujourd’hui. Les débats liés à l’« identité nationale » et à l’insécurité, la banalisation du programme du Front National, les reconduites à la frontière de Roms ou la crise des migrants en Méditerranée font que la question migratoire est une préoccupation pour la société et la scène politique française. L’ouvrage analyse comment des réalisateurs français tels que Yamina Benguigui, Laurent Cantet, Philippe Faucon, Philippe Lioret ou Marie-Claude Pernelle abordent les trajectoires migratoires (passées et présentes) propres à l’espace national français et les débats qu’elles suscitent. The historical legacy of the French colonial past and of decolonization, with its subsequent waves of immigration to the Hexagone continues to impact French society. Debates over “national identity” and insecurity, the increasing success of the Front National platform, the recent Roma repatriations, and migrant crisis in the Mediterranean are only a few examples of the importance of the migration question in French society and politics today.
