Abstract

Jackets furnish mechanical protection for cables during installation and heat cycling. Jackets retard the ingress of water and earth chemicals into the underlying core. Jackets over metallic shields, sheaths and concentric neutral wires also provide protection against corrosion.

IEEE Guide for Selection and Design of Aluminum Sheaths for Power Cables Scope: This project will revise the existing standard 635, Guide for Selection and Design of Aluminum Sheaths for Power Cables. The references will be updated and the text will be revised to increase readability. Tables will be updated to match current requirements. Purpose: The 635 guide was developed to help cable users and engineers understand the benefits and deficiencies of aluminum sheaths for power cables. The need for this information continues. As a result the guide will be revised to reflect the latest requirements and references thereby allowing the guide to continue to be a useful tool for the power delivery industry.
