Que sait-on de l'influence fondamentale de l'oeuvre de Daumier sur le travail du grand cinéaste soviétique Eisenstein ? Dès son enfance et jusqu'à sa mort, celui-ci s'est passionné pour le caricaturiste français, collectionnant lithographies et ouvrages le concernant. Cette proximité avec l'art de Daumier innerve l'ensemble de son activité créatrice : pratique cinématographique bien sûr, mais aussi oeuvre graphique et théâtrale, sans oublier l'écriture théorique et critique. En mettant en lumière ces liens profonds et en révélant par là même l'intérêt plus général du cinéaste pour la culture et l'art français, l'ouvrage pose également un regard neuf sur Daumier, un regard cinématographique. En effet, par son recours à ce qu'Eisenstein définit comme du montage cinématographique avant l'heure, Daumier apparaît comme un précurseur du cinéma. Les pages qu'Eisenstein lui consacre frappent par leur finesse d'analyse et par leur approche, qui préfigure les lectures les plus contemporaines de l'artiste. Par ailleurs, à travers l'exemple d'Eisenstein, cet ouvrage montre l'ampleur de la renommée internationale de Daumier, et plus particulièrement en Union soviétique. En croisant les méthodes de l'histoire de l'art et de l'histoire du cinéma, il révèle un chapitre inédit de l'histoire des transferts culturels franco-russes et propose de nombreux documents d'Eisenstein encore inédits ainsi que des textes jusque-là seulement accessible au public russophone.
