Le 26 juillet 1956, dans un monde crispé par la guerre froide, Nasser annonce dans un éclat de rire la nationalisation du canal de Suez. Une partie d’échecs s’engage alors à l’échelle de la planète. La France de Guy Mollet et la Grande-Bretagne d’Anthony Eden, concernées au premier chef, veulent répliquer par une intervention militaire pour faire respecter le droit international, sauvegarder leurs intérêts, protéger l’État d’Israël directement menacé par le monde arabe et, peut-être, renverser Nasser, soutien des indépendantistes algériens. Mais Londres, Paris et Tel-Aviv sont bien isolés. L’Union soviétique approuve le Raïs et les Américains verraient volontiers la mise hors-jeu de concurrents dans un Proche-Orient bien pourvu en pétrole. En application d’un protocole secret, l’armée israélienne attaque fin octobre l’Égypte et remporte des succès foudroyants, faisant place nette aux Français et Anglais pour qu’ils débarquent à Port-Saïd. Américains et Russes font alors pression pour faire céder les deux puissances occidentales, qui doivent s’incliner la rage au cœur. Denis Lefebvre, grâce à des documents inédits, éclaire d’un jour nouveau cette incroyable aventure politicomilitaire, dont les conséquences demeurent immenses.
