Hatshepsut—the daughter of a general who usurped Egypt’s throne and a mother with ties to the previous dynasty—was born into a privileged position in the royal household, and she was expected to bear the sons who would legitimize the reign of her father’s family. Her failure to produce a male heir was ultimately the twist of fate that paved the way for her improbable rule as a cross-dressing king. At just over twenty, Hatshepsut ascended to the rank of pharaoh in an elaborate coronation ceremony that set the tone for her spectacular reign as co-regent with Thutmose III, the infant king whose mother Hatshepsut out-maneuvered for a seat on the throne. Hatshepsut was a master strategist, cloaking her political power plays in the veil of piety and sexual reinvention. Just as women today face obstacles from a society that equates authority with masculinity, Hatshepsut shrewdly operated the levers of power to emerge as Egypt’s second female pharaoh. Hatshepsut successfully negotiated a path from the royal nursery to the very pinnacle of authority, and her reign saw one of Ancient Egypt’s most prolific building periods. Scholars have long speculated as to why her monuments were destroyed within a few decades of her death, all but erasing evidence of her unprecedented rule. Pour le monde arabo-musulman, Saladin est une figure mythique : de Nasser à Saddam Hussein, nombreux sont les dirigeants du XXe siècle qui se sont réclamés de lui, nombreux les poètes et les artistes qui ont exalté sa mémoire. A Damas, son mausolée est aujourd'hui encore un lieu de pèlerinage. En Occident aussi, une véritable légende s'est construite autour de ce sultan kurde (1137-1193) devenu champion de l'islam et souverain d'un immense empire. Par-dessus tout, il est celui qui sut reprendre Jérusalem aux croisés et susciter chez ses adversaires chrétiens, notamment Richard Coeur de Lion, un sentiment proche de l'admiration. Près de dix ans de travail ont été nécessaires pour écrire cette biographie, la première en français depuis un demi-siècle : à partir de sources variées (chroniques, récits de voyages, lettres, poèmes, traités administratifs...), Anne-Marie Eddé a voulu comprendre la formidable popularité qui fut celle de Saladin, une popularité à laquelle il veilla toujours de très près. Une propagande inlassable encensait le sultan, défenseur de l'islam, serviteur fidèle du calife de Bagdad, parangon de justice, magnanime et généreux envers ses sujets comme envers ses ennemis... S'efforçant de faire la part de l'imaginaire et de la réalité, Anne-Marie Eddé replace le personnage dans l'époque tourmentée qui fut la sienne. Elle décrit l'ascension d'un homme doté d'un grand sens politique, qui parvint à étendre sa domination sur un territoire allant du Nil à l'Euphrate et du Yémen au nord de la Mésopotamie ; un homme authentiquement intéressé par la vie religieuse, soucieux d'appliquer la loi musulmane, sans concessions mais sans excès non plus, notamment à l'égard des communautés juives et chrétiennes qu'abritait son empire ; un homme qui fut un guerrier infatigable, mais aussi un administrateur doué d'une prodigalité qui faisait le désespoir de ses proches. Un homme, enfin, qui montra autant de volonté dans la maladie, le deuil et les combats déçus que sur les chemins de la gloire.
