Heir of Ptolemy son of Lagus, Alexander the Great's general (who took Egypt over in 323BC), Ptolemy II Philadelphus reigned in Alexandria from 282 to 246. The greatest of the Hellenistic kings of his time, Philadelphus exercised power far beyond the confines of Egypt, while at his glittering royal court the Library of Alexandria grew to be a matchless monument to Greek intellectual life. In Egypt the Ptolemaic régime consolidated its power by encouraging immigration and developing settlement in the Fayum. This book examines Philadelphus' reign in a comprehensive and refreshing way. En 323 av. J.-C., à la mort d'Alexandre le Grand, le vaste territoire conquis par le Macédonien est partagé entre ses généraux. L'un d'entre eux, Ptolémée, hérite du pays du Nil où il fonde la dynastie des Lagides qui règne jusqu'à la mort de Cléopâtre VII en 30 av. J.-C. Durant trois siècles, des Gréco- Macédoniens s'installent en Égypte où se développe une société atypique. Alexandrie, cité grecque et nouvelle capitale dynastique, rayonne sur l'ensemble du bassin méditerranéen. Sa Bibliothèque royale, lieu d'accumulation et de recherche totalement inédit, devient le nouveau coeur de l'hellénisme. Fondée par Ptolémée Ier avec le soutien de Démétrios de Phalère (330- 282 av. J.-C.), cette structure exceptionnelle à plus d'un titre est considérée traditionnellement comme le point de départ de l'histoire des bibliothèques. Néanmoins, les sources littéraires directes et les vestiges archéologiques sont rares voire inexistants. La découverte, en dehors d'Alexandrie, de plusieurs centaines de fragments de rouleaux de papyrus d'oeuvres littéraires grecques témoigne de l'étendue de la dynamique culturelle et patrimoniale. L'étude des bibliothèques grecques en Égypte ptolémaïque lève le voile sur la diversité des structures de conservation et la nature des collections, tant à Alexandrie que dans les villes et villages hellénophones, notamment dans le Fayoum. Ces travaux de recherche portent un nouveau regard sur la richesse et la vitalité intellectuelle à l'époque lagide et permettent de revoir l'approche alexandro-centrée.

Dennoch bleiben viele Fragen - nicht zuletzt im Hinblick auf die Verwaltung der Provinzen und der Einflussgebiete. Trotz der angedeuteten Schwierigkeiten wird hier zum ersten Mal der Versuch unternommen, ein Gesamtbild der Verwaltung des ptolemaiischen Reichs zu erstellen.
