Global-historical approaches plead for the overcoming of national-historical traditions. This is accompanied by the demand to consciously reflect on the long-suppressed category of space in historical research. While there are signs of a rethinking in this context in the academic landscape, a national narrative continues to dominate in history lessons, both at the curricular level, but also in the planning of teaching units and materials for the classroom. With a view to the teaching of history in Germany, the call for a de-centering of historical learning provides suggestions as to how globally networked thinking can be promoted in the classroom. The starting point of these considerations is the teaching material series 'Wissen um globale Verflechtungen' ('Knowledge of Global Interconnections').

From an educational-historical point of view this book analyses the cultural models that underlie the conception and organisation of secondary teacher education and the professionalisation of future secondary school teachers in Europe. These models, based on different conceptions of school, citizenship and the teaching profession, have an enormous influence on school policy. Taking the examples of Italy and Germany, the complex history of teacher education is reconstructed and analysed. The articles deal, in a long-term perspective, with the emergence of national models of teacher education at the end of the 18th century, their consolidation in the 19th and 20th centuries and their transnational transformations between past and present.

Starting from the end of the Middle Ages and throughout the early modern era, there was a vast diffusion of the letter form, developed in the chancelleries of European courts and among elites according to canons that blended the rhetoric and chancery tradition with humanistic knowledge. The epistolary style suits the transmission of information and political decisions as well as a frequent exchange of everyday life news, revealing, at both public and private levels, a web of interpersonal relationships and, along with it, evidence of feelings that create ‘emotional communities’ to which, in many of the cases examined here, individuals looking for social recognition belong.
