This publication compiles and analyses the latest data on the international nature of studies, research and teaching in Germany and other major countries. The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the German Centre for Research on Higher Education and Science Studies (DZHW) have issued this standard reference work on international mobility in the higher education sector since 2001. The spotlights in this edition report on the retention of international students in their respective host countries, preparatory courses for university admission at Studienkollegs in Germany and the study-related international mobility of domestic students at German universities. The authors of the publication analyse and interpret developments relating to international students and researchers in Germany, the mobility patterns of students and researchers from Germany and international academic mobility worldwide. Wissenschaft weltoffen integrates the international data published by the OECD and UNESCO with the national data from the Federal Statistical Office. For over 20 years, in combination with other indicators and time series, the publication has provided a valid basis for analysing and monitoring the internationalisation of the higher education sector.

Gender- and sex-related norms have an impact on us from the first to the last day of our lives. What are the effects of such norms on the education of children and adolescents? Conveyed via parents/family, school, and peers, they seem to be an inseparable part of human relations. After its favorable reception in German-speaking countries from 2014 onwards, this title is now available in English. The texts show that the traditional assumption of a dualistic, bipolar normativity of sex and gender leads to children being taught gender-typical behavior. The contributions in this volume explore the reasons for these practices and open the debate on the divergence between the prevailing norms and the plurality of different life plans. In addition, the book helps to disengage the topic of sex and gender from a hitherto narrowly circumscribed context of sexual orientation. The contributions point the way towards a culture of respect and mutual acceptance and show new methodological as well as theoretical approaches, e.g. by introducing the figure of the continuum, so that, in future research projects, more than just the two sexes and genders of female and male might be considered as a new normality.

This innovative volume focuses on the significance of early Christianity for modern means of addressing poverty, by offering a rigorous study of deprivation and its alleviation in both earliest Christianity and today's world. The contributors seek to present the complex ways in which early Christian ideas and practices relate to modern ideas and practices, and vice versa. In this light, the book covers seven major areas of poverty and its causes, benefaction, patronage, donation, wealth and dehumanization, `the undeserving poor', and responsibility. Each area features an expert in early Christianity in its Jewish and Graeco-Roman settings, paired with an expert in modern strategies for addressing poverty and benefaction; each author engages with the same topic from their respective area of expertise, and responds to their partner's essay. Giving careful attention toboth the continuities and discontinuities between the ancient world and today, the contributors seek to inform and engage church leaders, those working in NGOs concerned with poverty, and all interested in these crucial issues, both Christian and not.
