"La philosophie des Lumières pose un certain nombre de principes qui vont conduire à repenser dans ses fondements la question de l'éducation : la prééminence de la raison, la primauté de l'expérience, l'idée de Nature comme origine - qui inscrivent l'existence de l'homme lui-même dans l'ordre naturel. Dans ce cadre, il s'agit de penser de façon adéquate la nature de l'esprit, de son développement et de ses capacités, et de définir les conditions conséquentes pour l'éducation et l'instruction.
