Limité en principe à la bourgeoisie, différent de l'enseignement secondaire des garçons, l'enseignement secondaire féminin renvoie à l'image de la femme que se faisait la société du 19e siècle finissant. L'histoire de cette institution, contemporaine des lois scolaires de Ferry, a été conduite sur plusieurs registres - pédagogique, administratif et aussi social - à partir des archives publiques et d'abondantes sources imprimées : journaux corporatifs, articles de revues. Deux mille cinq cents dossiers environ de professeurs, directrices, institutrices, exploités par la méthode informatique, rendent compte de la vie et des caractéristiques d'un corps de fonctionnaires, de la République opportuniste au temps du Cartel des gauches. Tour à tour machine anticléricale et garant de la stabilité sociale, l'enseignement secondaire des jeunes filles est devenu moyen, pour les femmes bourgeoises, d'entrer dans le monde du travail. Ainsi l'institution a-t-elle été à la fois miroir des mœurs et facteur d'une transformation capitale.
