Harold Edgerton was an engineer, educator, explorer, entrepreneur, as well as a revolutionary photographer—in the words of his former student and Life photographer Gjon Mili, “an American original.” Edgerton’s photos combine exceptional engineering talent with aesthetic sensibility, and this book presents more than 100 of his most exemplary works. Seeing the Unseen contains iconic photos from the beloved milk drops and bullets slicing through fruit and cards, to less well known but equally compelling images of sea creatures and sports figures in action. Paired with excerpts from Edgerton’s laboratory notebooks, the book reveals the full range of his technical virtuosity and his enthusiasm for the natural and human-built worlds. Essays by Edgerton students and collaborators J. Kim Vandiver and Gus Kayafas explore his approach to photography, engineering and education, while MIT Museum curators Gary Van Zante and Deborah Douglas examine his significance to the history of photography, technology and modern culture. Co-published with the MIT Museum, Cambridge, Massachusetts

Artistes présentés dans l'exposition : Anna & Bernhard Blume, Lucia Bru, Edith Dekyndt, Marcel Dinahet, Lionel Estève, Patrick Guns, Ann Veronica Janssens, Steve Kaspar, Joachim Koester, Aglaïa Konrad, Didier Marcel, Jean-Luc Moulène, Bruce Nauman, Panamarenko,Walter Swennen, ierre Toby, Daan Van Golden.

Timely and wide-ranging, this volume explores in-depth the theme of destruction in international contemporary art. While destruction as a theme can be traced throughout art history, from the early atomic age it has remained a pervasive and compelling element of contemporary visual culture. Damage Control features the work of more than 40 international artists working in a range of media--painting, sculpture, photography, film, installation, and performance--who have used destruction as a means of responding to their historical moment and as a strategy for inciting spectacle and catharsis, as a form of rebellion and protest, or as an essential part of re-creation and restoration. Including works by such diverse artists as Jean Tinguely, Andy Warhol, Bruce Conner, Yoko Ono, Gordon Matta-Clark, Pipilotti Rist, Yoshitomo Nara, and Laurel Nakadate, the book reaches beyond art to enable a broader understanding of culture and society in the aftermath of World War II, under the looming fear of annihilation in the atomic age, and in the age of terrorism and other disasters, real and imagined.
