Abstract

"Addresses and presents approaches to diminish the environmental impact of agro-food industries and food consumption while also supporting professionals and enterprises that aspire to improve efficiences within the industry. Environmental Impact of Agro-Food Industry and Food Consumption covers trends associated with the impact of food production on the environment, using a life cycle analysis and standard methods to estimate the environmental impact of the food industry. The book discusses the environmental impacts of feeding crops to poultry and pigs, organic agriculture, the confectionary and dairy industry, cheese, ice cream and pasta production, the tea consumption chain, and foods refrigeration. Also discussed are food waste and consumption in hospitality and global diets. Written for food scientists, technologists, engineers, chemists, environmentalists, environmental technologists, and academics and professionals working in the food industry, Environmental Impact of Agro-Food Industry and Food Consumption is an essential resource on sustainability in the food industry"--Page 4 of cover

Abstract

'Domus' delves into examples of the drama and short fiction of seventeenth-century Spanish as aesthetic forms that responded to the development of the nobility and urban domestic world of the Iberian Peninsula. The book offers a journey through the realm of the habitable, including architecture and the interior decoration of the house; gender dynamics; domestic economy and the use of objects; and light and space, stopping along the way to consider the historical aspects that transformed the early modern home as well as the creative imagination of the authors of the Baroque. This study shows that urban comedy, theatre and the courtly novel illustrate both the importance of domestic issues in fiction and the Baroque perception that the house was a unique stage for dramatizing domesticity. Abstract

Food-growing gardens first appeared in early medieval cities during a period of major social, economic, and political change in the Italian peninsula, and they quickly took on a critical role in city life. The popularity of urban gardens in the medieval city during this period has conventionally been understood as a sign of decline in the post-Roman world, signalling a move towards a subsistence economy. Caroline Goodson challenges this interpretation, demonstrating how urban gardens came to perform essential roles not only in the economy, but also in cultural, religious, and political developments in the emerging early medieval world. Observing changes in how people interacted with each other and their environments from the level of individual households to their neighbourhoods, and the wider countryside, Goodson draws on documentary, archival, and archaeological evidence to reveal how urban gardening reconfigured Roman ideas and economic structures into new, medieval values.

Abstract

With this book, the reader will become familiar with services and service research as evolving phenomena in private, non-industrial family forestry. Targeted as learning material for higher-education students in Western economies, and as a handbook for forest scientists worldwide, the book has a strong theoretical base, but also a practical orientation with examples of novel forest services from different regions and contexts. Conceptual foundations of service dominant logic (S-D logic) will introduce the reader to the service research lenses, through which the subsequent chapters scrutinize services designed and offered to family forest owners. These publicly funded or market services typically help owners fulfil various land ownership objectives through forest management. Increasingly, these services are helping landowners to secure and improve ecosystem services provision from their forests and helping to meet demands from the various stakeholders. While the book essentially approaches services as a continuous, value co-creation activity by forest owners and service providers, it recognizes and analyses the role of supporting institutions and policy frameworks in service evolution. Moreover, the book takes a step further by contemplating the wider societal transitions that may be required to enable service ideas to become service innovations as part of paradigmatic changes of markets, entrepreneurship, and customer behavior that help society move towards more sustainable and responsible bio-based economy.

Abstract

Our diets are going to change dramatically as global warming affects growing seasons and the availability of different foods around the world. Meanwhile, our foodways are among the biggest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions. To address these challenges Food in a Changing Climate demands we look beyond our plates to the roots of inequity in our food systems. It presents an unashamedly political agenda for 'deep adaptation', focused on the rejuvenation and strengthening of local and regional food systems that have been steadily eroded in the name of economic efficiency. The colonial origins of fossil-fuel based food production and trade persist in the marginalisation of farmers, food workers, and fishers in a corporatized food system that promotes the exploitation of the environment, excess production, and hyper-consumerism. These factors contribute to climate change, poverty, and health inequities on a global scale. Drawing on case studies from around the world, this book illustrates how the commodification of food has made us particularly vulnerable to climate change, extreme weather events, and pandemics such as COVID19. These shocks reveal the danger of our reliance on increasingly complex supply chains - dominated by a decreasing number of mega-companies - for our food security. The unsustainability of the way we produce and eat food is clear. It has been for a long time. Food in a Changing Climate explores how we can cultivate resilient communities through the just application of new technologies, the recovery of traditional knowledges, and by building diversity to protect the livelihoods of food producers everywhere.

Abstract

This book outlines the underlying principles on which interior lighting should be based, provides detailed information on the lighting hardware available today and gives guidance for the design of interior lighting installations resulting in good visual performance and comfort, alertness and health. The book is divided into three parts. Part One discusses the fundamentals of the visual and non-visual mechanisms and the practical consequences for visual performance and comfort, for sleep, daytime alertness and performance, and includes chapters on age effects, therapeutic effects and hazardous effects of lighting. Part Two deals with the lighting hardware: lamps (with emphasis on LEDs), gear, drivers and luminaires including chapters about lighting controls and LEDs beyond lighting. Part Three is the application part, providing the link between theory and practice and supplying the reader with the knowledge needed for lighting design. It describes the relevant lighting criteria for good and efficient interior lighting and discusses the International, European and North American standards and recommendations for interior lighting. A particular focus is on solid state light sources (LEDs) and the possibility to design innovative, truly-sustainable lighting installations that are adaptable to changing circumstances. The design of such installations is difficult and the book offers details of the typical characteristics of the many different solid state light sources, and of the aspects determining the final quality of interior lighting. Essential reading for interior lighting designers, lighting engineers and architects, the book will also be a useful reference for researchers and students. Reviews of Road Lighting by the same author: "If you are going to design streetlighting, you must read this book....a solid, comprehensive textbook written by an acknowledged expert in the field – if you have a query about any aspect of streetlighting design, you will find the answer here.” – LUX, August 2015 “…a realy comprehensive book dealing with every aspect of the subject well…essential text for reference on this subject” – Lighting Journal, March 2015.
