Thirty years ago a new linguistic paradigm was created when Einar Haugen combined language with ecology. For Haugen, 'the ecology of language' meant the study of the interrelations between languages in the human mind and in the multilingual community. Since then a special branch of linguistics, named Ecolinguistics, has developed in which the connection between language and ecology has been established in a variety of ways and using a multitude of methods and approaches. The Ecolinguistics Reader brings together the work of precursors in the field (e.g. E. Sapir, G. Steiner) and classic author

This handbook is the first comprehensive overview of ecolinguistics or language ecology. It discusses language diversity, language minorities and language endangerment; the role of language and discourse in describing, hiding and helping to solve environmental problems; and argues for ecolinguistics as a pace-maker into a new scientific age.

Since then a special branch of linguistics, named Ecolinguistics, has developed in which the connection between language and ecology has been established in a variety of ways and using a multitude of methods and approaches. In addition to the original ecolinguistic topics of language interrelation, language endangerment and language pressure, Ecolinguistics Reader also gives due consideration to the themes of biological and linguistic diversityas well as the ecocritical aspect."

"This book serves as a collectively generated (re)invented sourcebook-a glossary on the edge of extinction, a language for landscapes under threat. This glossary compiles terms (many borrowed, invented, recast) that might help us configure or elaborate our engagements with place. Each entry is a sketch, a notion, an opening"--

Corpus-Assisted Ecolinguistics introduces key research concepts, principles and techniques in ecolinguistics and corpus-aided discourse study, answering foundational questions for researchers new to the discipline and asserting the urgent need to expand its scope. Breaking new ground, the book analyzes under-explored environmental discourses that have a tangible impact on ecological wellbeing and sustainability by perpetuating harmful attitudes, practices and ideologies. Chapters present in-depth case studies, including the perceptions of single-use disposable products in contemporary consumer culture, the semantic prosody of the word 'water' in national contexts and the use of humor in reports on animal escapes from slaughterhouses. They draw on techniques such as concordances, collocations, n-grams and keyword analysis to show in each case that ecological degradation and crisis have become normalized, and even trivialized, in popular discourse. By applying the most effective tools from corpus linguistics to a diverse range of environmental discourses, this book makes a significant contribution to advancing the field of ecolinguistics.
