"Materials are at the core of our societies and of our economies. They are part of pressing environmental challenges but they also provide powerful answers. It is therefore no longer possible to think of materials from the restricted standpoint of Materials and Engineering Sciences and this book proposes a more holistic vision of their connection with the Environment and with Society. The book is meant for students, researchers, engineers, and concerned citizens interested in how materials, nature and people interact: at the level of raw materials and energy resources, of innovation and emergence of new materials functions, of historical continuity with materials of the past, and of emissions to air, water and soil and thus in connection also with health and toxicology issues, climate change and collapse of biodiversity. The book examines how materials relate to society with complex metrics, but also, more deeply, how they generate eco-social services, and, finally, have agency along with the people who use them and invent them (Actor Network Theory). This book is unique in its approach across so many fields. There are many excellent treatises on materials science and more on industrial ecology. However, the connection with the social dimension of sustainability is still rarely discussed and the pluridisciplinary cocktail of approaches used here is truly new"

Deux Symposiums internationaux ont eu lieu, à Graz en octobre 1998 et à Joensuu en septembre 1999 sur le thème du développement régional durable, avec le soutien de la Commission européenne sous les présidences européennes respectives de l'Autriche et de la Finlande. Ce troisième Symposium organisé sur le thème "Recherche et Développement Régional Durable" visait à mettre en relation les acteurs du développement régional et les chercheurs, en insistant sur la spécificité de l'échelon régional dans les questions de développement durable et sur la coopération nécessaire entre les différentes disciplines de recherche concernées, mais aussi entre chercheurs et acteurs du développement durable. Le symposium a été une occasion de présenter les résultats des projets de recherche financés dans le cadre du 4ème et du 5ème Programme Cadre européen. Mais aussi les résultats d'expériences pilotes, notamment les expériences de promotion du développement durable au travers des Fonds structurels européens, ou les projets concernant la gestion intégrée des zones côtières. Two European Symposium have taken place, in Graz in October 1998 and in Joensuu in September 1999 on the subject of sustainable regional development. The Symposium were supported by the European Commission and the respective Austrian and Finnish Presidencies. The Third Symposium "Regions-Cornerstones for Sustainable Development" will draw upon the results obtained previously, bringing together key-actors of regional development and researchers. L'économie circulaire s'impose peu à peu comme une alternative à l'économie linéaire qui est le modèle économique de notre monde contemporain.
