En raison de son importance, l'alimentation a une place à part dans le paysage développemental du bébé. A priori solidement ancrée dans la physiologie, elle s'avère plus fragile qu'il n'y paraît. Les recherches épidémiologiques récentes montrent que 25 % à 35 % des bébés en clinique pédiatrique ordinaire sont sujets à des difficultés d'alimentation restrictive. Pour 2% des bébés et jeunes enfants, ces difficultés peuvent devenir plus importantes et se transformer en grave trouble du comportement alimentaire mettant leur vie en danger. Les troubles précoces du comportement alimentaire sont complexes et hétérogènes. Les protagonistes sont nombreux, les causalités multiples et les intrications somatopsychiques importantes.
