The central theme of this publication is the influence of eastern European Jewish architects, who played a significant role in the reform movements in architecture and urban planning early in the 20th century and helped shape modernist architecture, or Neues Bauen. Due to socioeconomic factors, the local architects involved were often Jewish. In German-speaking networks academic institutions as the Bauhaus, the Deutscher Werkbund, and other were quite influential. As in Germany, due to National Socialist persecution, exile or emigration, the architects themselves have frequently been forgotten. 13 scholars and professors from eight eastern European countries and from Israel and Germany reconstruct the interactions and exchanges through the works and biographies of the architects.

The East Central Europe in Exile series consists of two volumes which contain chapters written by both esteemed and renowned scholars, as well as young, aspiring researchers whose work brings a fresh, innovative approach to the study of migration. Altogether, there are thirty-eight chapters in both volumes focusing on the East Central European UmigrU experience in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This very same experience led to the formation of East Central Europe in exile - a powerful ethnic conglomerate of people pushed out of the region by poverty, war, persecution, and who maintained their transatlantic links in a variety of forms. - - The first volume, Transatlantic Migrations, focuses on the reasons for emigration from the lands of East Central Europe; from the Baltic to the Adriatic, the intercontinental journey, as well as on the initial adaptation and assimilation processes. - - The second volume is slightly different in scope, for it focuses on the aspect of negotiating new identities acquired in the adopted homeland. The authors contributing to Transatlantic Identities focus on the preservation of the east central European identity, maintenance of contacts with the old countryA, and activities pursued on behalf of, and for the sake of, the abandoned homeland. Combined, both volumes describe the transnational processes affecting the east central European migrants. -

The transformation process in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) after 1989 is often clothed in terms of historical and geographical categories, either as a 'return of history' or as a 'return to Europe', or both. Either way, the radical right in CEE claims a prominent place in this politics of return. Studies of the radical right echo the more general concern, in analyses of the region, with historical analogies and the role of legacies. Sometimes parallels are discovered between the post-1989 radical right and interwar fascism. They imply a 'Weimarization' of the transformation countries

Only by understanding Central and Eastern Europe's turbulent history during the first half of the twentieth century can we hope to make sense of the conflicts and crises that have followed World War II and, after that, the collapse of Soviet-controlled state socialism. Ivan Berend looks closely at the fateful decades preceding World War II and at twelve countries whose absence from the roster of major players was enough in itself, he says, to precipitate much of the turmoil. - Jacket flap.
